Alternative to antibiotics for UTI
Can anyone suggest some alternatives to antibiotics for urinary tract infections in early pregnancy? My client is already drinking pure cranberry juice, has cut out most sugar from her diet, and is taking probiotics.
I won't tell her what to take, but I'd like to point her in the right direction for more research. What about garlic?

Uva ursi, corn silk, couch grass as infusions can help. She can look in an herb book like Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal or Herbal Healing for Women

I hope the alternative therapy she seeks helps her, but if it doesn't I wouldn't hesitate to call a doc. I know that everyone is different, but from my personal experience with them, and having one spread to my kidney's requiring hospitalization, this just isn't one of those things I'd even try alternative therapies for. I hope it doesn't cause problems with her pregnancy.

I also had one spread to my kidneys, and it was one of the most painful experiences I've ever had. If she starts to feel any pain in her lower back, tell her to go to the hospital immediately!

I've used reiki on myself and cured a UTI in a few hours. I've used drinking lots of water and taking Vit C. I've used homeopathy. I've also had the other end of the scale where my daughter had constant UTI's in her short life. We tried all sorts of alternative therapies, but she always needed antibiotics. She ended up with surgery to correct a defect at 5 years old and hasn't looked back since.
From my experience, I really think people react in individual ways. Sometimes there are underlying issues. Even with alternative therapies, there is still a time where an expert in that field (alternative or otherwise) will need to be consulted.
Personally, I like alternative therapies as a starting point. I'm just not sure of how this issue might impact on a pregnancy. I'll be interested to see the responses.
Best of luck whatever your client decides.
Just my thoughts.
Kind Regards,
AngelsMum.

I have a friend that gets UTI quite a bit and she always takes Colloidal Silver. Works every time. I also read recently that grape juice works just as effectively as cranberry juice. It doesn't hurt to take cranberry supplements as well.

Thanks, everyone. She saw her midwife and it wasn't a UTI, and she hasn't had one since. I appreciate the insights and will forward her some of your ideas for prevention.

I see someone mentioned colloidal silver. I have never used it for UTI but I did use it for an ear infection and it cleared it up the next day. Fantastic stuff!

Uva Ursi Leaf (steeped 8 hours) Infusion – drink 1 cup of infusion every 12 hours for the first 2 days. In severe cases, 1 cup every 4 hours. Continue with at least 1 cup daily for another 3 days. Do not use Uva Ursi for more than 10 days straight. Use with some caution while pregnant as it is a strong diuretic.
Yarrow Flowers – can be added to strengthen the Uva Ursi Infusion if Uva Ursi alone doesn’t work after 5 days. Drink 2-3 cups daily for no more than 5 days.

Yeah, I thought uva ursi wasn't good while pg. Colliodal silver is probably what I would use.

i have talked to a couple of midwife/herbalists in the area recently about it and the only contraindication for uva ursi in pregnancy is due to its action as a diuretic. its not a super strong one either so its pretty safe to take even during pregnancy and very helpful as long as mom drinks enough fluids.
