Perineal "tea"
My doula made a tea that I put in a water bottle that I squirted on my perineum when I went I urinated post-partum. Anyone know what she probably used?
I'm thinking Comfrey and maybe calendula. I'd like to do that for my client who is due on the 31.
Also, another doula friend of mine said she froze maxi pads with about 2 TBSP of strong comfrey tea on it. ????

AN herbalist makes me tea bags that include:
calendula flowers, comfrey leaf, uva ursi, witch hazel (all organic). I buy it in bulk from her and then buy the large tea bags (that make a quart of tea) and instruct my clients to draw a shallow bath (enough to just sit in not soak in)..HOT water to steep the tea and then when cool soak for 30 minutes. It helps immensely in healing traumatized tissues/swelling whether the mom had repairs done or not.

I read in The Pocket Doula to soak washclothes in a batch of Chamomile tea, fold them into quarters and freeze them to use as ice packs after the birth. Anyone tried this??

It isn't anything you don't already know but I like to give to clients on their last prenatal visit and pick it up at the pp visit. I think it is great for dads because it is quick reference lists of each phase along with actual photographs of comfort techniques and positions for labor etc. Its only about 30 pages so he could actually read the entire thing while looking things up on an as needed basis. So, for your own information, no you probably don't need it but I think it is a great resource for couples. My 2 cents

This maybe a silly, but how would you keep it frozen throughout labour? I have been with clients for 20+ hrs some times, would I lug a freezer with me? And what would the hospital say about the use of tea? Should you talk to the nurse first? Or is this strickly something to use at Homebirths? I had 1 question and it ended up being 5!! hehehe

I was thinking you would have them for at home. Either a home birth or once you get home from the hospital. I can't imagine that a nurse would be ok with mom using them in the hospital even if you could find a way to keep them frozen!

Maxi pads soaked in witch hazel work great. Also, brewing some witch hazel herb and using that in a peri bottle or soak is said to be very healing.

at the last birth i was at, the midwife said we could put lavender, uva ursi, comfrey, calendula and sea salt in jar, make strong tea by brewing with boiling water, put in fridge and add some to peri-bottle each time OR just use warm water in peri. my client said "sea salt? - i'll just use the warm water, thanks" lol.
i thought the brew did sound good though.

Wouldn't salt be like, a cleaning or anti infective ingredient. I don't know if it stings or not..seems like it may, but maybe as a part of the whole brew it works? I hope to become more knowledgeable on these herbal matters and I enjoy reading the responses.

I did the whole witch hazel on maxi pads in the freezer thing - AMAZING! I didn't do it with #1 but did with #2 and loved it! It worked wonders.

Yes, sea salt! If it is a dilution similar to that found in the body, it is actually very soothing. Think gargling with salt water for a sore throat. It kills germs AND is soothing.
