Dumb question about aromatherapy

OK, I know that essential oils are not safe during pregnancy (unless in the hands of a trained practioner) but does all aromatherapy involve essential oils. Does it count if the oils are mixed with a cream instead of a base oil and therefore more diluted? Is it dangerous to put EO on a washcloth or cottom balls in the room? I guess what I am asking, is it the contact with the EO that makes them dangerous or just the scent?

what do you mean "dangerous"? Some things are to be avoided in pregnancy like pennyroyal, but I'm not sure what you are talking about.

The scent of Jasmine and Clary Sage oils can stimulate contractions - and this intensifies if the oils are put on the skin. I'd skip putting any essential oils on the skin during pregnancy because if they are put on the belly they are absorbed and can pass through the placenta. I do use clary sage and Jasmine during labor, but usually in a diffuser or on a warm washcloth very diluted. I also use a few different oil blends, usually on the washcloth. A citrus blend for energy before pushing and a spearmint eucalyptus blend for relaxation. I only use them on clients I am close with (as in, knew her before she got pregnant) and I tell clients to do the research on the oils and deicde if they'd like to use them during labor.

I think that scented lotions are safe, but to be safest tell your client to bring her favorite lotion/oil with her and use that. That way it is not a liability issue like it would be if you were using your oils on her.

Yes, a lot of essential oils can be toxic in pregnancy. Many are safe. Getting an education is one way to insure you practice safely, others are extensive self study. Most things that are sold in stores are generally safe (gras).
