I have had several clients do this. All they need to do is bring the package with them. Have them put it in their hospital bag. When they arrive, notify the staff they are banking cord blood. BEFORE she gets an IV have her take out the tubes for her. She will have a few tubes in there that have to be collected before baby is born. It's usually 2-3. She can have this done at the same time they are doing her IV. For 2 reasons:
1. so she doesn't have to be poked again
2. so they don't charge her a lab fee (since the nurse can't draw for this type of thing, they need to call the lab). I have had a few nurses just do it, but they usually throw a fit.
So make sure she pulls those tubes out before they stick her and set them aside so they remember as they are doing the IV.
After that, we just wait until the baby is born. They don't HAVE to clamp the cord immediately. I have had it happen 3 ways.
1. clamp immediately
2. delayed clamping 5-10min
3. wait for placenta to be born then collect the blood
Your clients can still request delayed clamping but the Dr. might say that it will be hard to collect the blood so it's up to them on how much they want to push the issue. For instance, "at least wait until my baby is crying before clamping." They usually don't fill the entire bag full of blood either. Some is better then none. In the case of waiting for the placenta to be born, yes, there really isn't any blood in the cord. Usually they pull it from the placenta.
After everything is collected, it is up to the clients to call for the courier so it can be sent off. Their packet will have all the instructions for that.
