does pitocin=epidural or pain meds

Have you ever had a client receive pitocin augmentation go natural? It seems like pitocin makes things so intense there is no way to go without and epidural or other pain med....

No, I have had several clients go without pain medication in a pitocin induction. I do think it is harder, but it can be done.

It's definitely possible. It's much harder because of the tendency Pitocin has to make contractions so much more intense and closer together, but women have done it.

My 3rd birth was a pitocin induction. It was 4 weeks early, unfortunately, so it ended in c-section, but for the 36 hours leading up to it I had no pain meds. HypnoBabies was awesome!

I've never had a woman go without pain med who was induced or augmented. One put up a good fight but it totally changed her pattern and she got an epi stat.

I have seen it happen...but not often. The pit definitely tosses them in the deep end, so to speak. Big contractions one on top of another...a lot of women don't expect that and want the epidural pronto.

I did it, personally.
And I have had clients do it.

IMO it can be done and done as gently as possible, if they:
Leave the bag of waters intact.
Start at the lowest possible dose and increase it by not more than 2 (units) every 15-30 minutes, and once an active pattern is established leave it alone.

I have had a client with pitocin go without pain meds. It is possible.

I almost made it! 53 of 56 hours of pit without pain meds with my Bella's birth.

I have had several clients accept pitocin and then go on to give birth vaginally without any pain medication (as well as my own birth experience). Not too long ago I had a run of clients who all chose to be induced and made it all the way through without anything for pain relief aside from the basic Doula skills and encouragement.

Of my clients who have been induced/augmented with pit, a majority of them have gone without pain meds. I usually suggest a gentle induction where the pit is started at one or two and turned up no less than every 45 minutes and it is only turned up by one or two. This makes for a much more normal labor pattern, IMO. Also, keeping the BOW in-tact for as long as possible helps.

My son was induced and I had no pain meds. I have had a few clients as well. It can happen.

Thanks! I was just starting to wonder after having 2 w/ pitocin getting augmentation. 1 had planned no epidural, but than they gave her the pitocin to get things going more regularly and she decided to get an epidural. I tried to see if she wanted to wait a bit.....nope!

I had a client last summer. This was her second baby and she did not want a repeat for her first labor and birth. Long story…bottom line: arrived at hospital 5pm, pit started at 6:15pm, was increased at 7:15pm and again at 8pm (still no “real labor pattern”). By 8:45pm she started to feel some contractions (now the rules were “can’t get out of bed”), so I sat her straight up and massaged her legs in a downward motion. She got real active around 10pm, by 10:20 she told me she can’t do this anymore and wanted drugs (still doing the massage). 10:30 she felt pressure, and wanted to go to the bathroom. I kept her focused on her legs and the downward motion, by 10:40 her eyes got real wide and said, “my baby”. I called the nurse who “freaked” and called the doc. He walked in and baby came out within 7 minutes! HAHAHA.
Sad part….almost all the nurses came in to “congratulate her” because they “don’t’ know ANYONE to have that much pit and no epi/drugs”!
So YES….if a mom wants it bad enough she can do pit with no meds.

Yup, it can be done! It does take extra encouragement but it can happen and when it does the mom feels like she can take on the world!
