Scrubs for Doulas: Poll

I just finished reading all our threads on shoes and clothes. I thought it would be neat to take a poll and see exactly how many doulas thought wearing scrubs to hosptial births was a good idea.

I'm leaning toward a full scrub set, in an unusual color and style, that has my information embordered on it.

So, let the voting begin, and don't forget to tell us how you voted!

I think it is appropriate, but I personally find them uncomfortable. I am much more comfy in jeans or khakis and a regular shirt.

i think there are some pieces that could be worn, something that is easily slipped on/off so that you don't track the "world" in the the birthing suite and you don't expose your family to the hospital pathologins(sp?). I found a really cute pair at Denver Hayes and they don't even look like the typical ones that docs and nurses wear.

I voted that "yes, a full set is okay" however I currently don't wear scrubs at all but am looking at getting a top. I'm more comfy in jeans/yoga pants...I find they move better and are more comfy for what I'm doing but a shirt wouldn't be too bad to have.

If you are comfortable in the full set, than go for it! I don't think that it would be a bad thing at all!

I guess wear what you want. I prefer jeans or yoga pants... my usual clothes. In order for me to work effectivly I need to feel comfortable, and for me that is wearing my normal everyday clothes.
Scrubs are comfy...but the make me feel fat and frumpy. just my own humble opinion.

Oh my gosh, I agree totally. When I have had to wear scrubs at the hospital (when I go in for surgery) I have felt like a big fat moo cow!!!! I hate them!!!!!

I haven't been to a birth, but when I do go I will choose not to wear scrubs. I feel like they have such a medical look which is what most mommas don't want to have more of in the room with them. I feel like I am to make them feel as comfortable as possible especially in a hospital situation and me being in scrubs would just feel not so home-like kwim? I plan on eventually getting yoga pant with an embroidered shirt. comfortable yet home like.

I have three full sets that I ordered from www.a1uniformscrubs.com (I love them because i can wear them any where I go (I'm having my logo embroidered on mine, too...if i can ever remember to go get it done! ) But they are Urbane scrubs by Landau and they defiantely do not look like any of the scrubs worn at the hopsital. I wear them to be CBE classes and almost every day just out around town....then people see that you have on the cute scrubs (that are very falttering, I might add...dh says they're sexy! HAHA! They are pretty fitted but still really easy to move around in and get down onthe floor to give massage, or whatever....my favorite sets are the ones with the drawstring cargos and the mock crossover top b/c it cinches in at the waist so that you don't look like a Moo-cow! lol)
and they will ask, "so where do you work?" or, "what do you do?" Once I get my logo on them, I'm sure I'll have it done on some Regualr t-shirts, too, and just wear those with my scrub pants. They're gonna rock as maternity pants! lol!

Hi,
I voted undecided not because I am but I didn't feel the other responses reflected my opinion. I think it is ok to wear scrubs if that is what a doula wants to do. I personally would not wear them because they are associated with medical personnel and hospitals and I do not want to be seen this way.
We are getting shirts and fleece jackets embroidered in with our logo and in our colours and I will wear these with a nice pair of yoga pants.

Cheers,
Shawna

Oh, btw: don't forget to check with your hospitals to make sure that there are not any specific colors that they don't want you to wear. For isntance; we can't wear royal blue because that is the color the nurses wear. My favorite set is Navey Blue with Ciel blue trim....I'll add some links

This is the most flattering top IMHO http://www.a1uniformscrubs.com/urbane-9511.htm
These are the most flattering pants, and SO Handy! The pockets are at the perfect place on your leg to slip your phone in and out of and to grab a pen in a hurry, or whatever. I think they'l be great for lolli pops for mama or hard candies and extra lip balm http://www.a1uniformscrubs.com/urbane-9702.htm
And it's free shipping over $99...yes, i got free shipping! lol I'm asking for more for Christmas....I just love the way they wear and I feel very put together, yet i don't have to worry about what I am going to wear and wether or not I look professional.

Bet you're sorry you asked, now, huh, DoulaforChrist? lol! J/K

I wear light pink or purple scrub pants, a shirt with my company information on it from my cafe press store, a Crocs that are the same color as my logo. I use to wear yoga pants or jeans (usually a nicer pair) and since I made I have noticed a huge difference in how I am treated by the hospital staff and doctors. Since the switch, I haven't been asked to leave for epidurals and I've been able to go back for cesareans (sometimes I am in the OR w/mom and sometimes they let me go into the room where they scrub up and I can watch). Also, I feel like I am respected a little more. The nurses and docs don't seem to mind when I ask questions and/or offer suggestions. I feel like they thought I was 'in the way' before. I will admit that this just could be me and there really hasn't been a change, I just don't feel like that is the case.

The clothes I wear to a birth are washed seperatly from my other clothes, as soon as I get home and then as soon as they are dry I put them back in my doula bag. I usually don't change until I get to their house or the hospital. This is my way of minimizing what I bring in with me when it comes to germs and such.

I wear the Urbane Scrub brand, specifically their Slant Cargo Pocket Pant, and I love them! I don't feel frumpy in them at all but I do in the pair given to me by one of the hospitals when a mom's bag of waters released all over me and I didn't have a change of clothes (I was still pretty new at this point).

I have black scrub pants and a pink scrub top with "doula" embroidered in black on it. I also have a pink and black bag so I decided to do everything in pink and black. There is no way anyone is mistaking me for a nurse. I wanted the scrubs just for convenience. They are always clean and ready. I really like the ones posted....I may have to get a set of those...if they come in pink and black!

Oh, and I made it a point to ask the head nurse of L&D if she thought it would be an issue with the nurses feeling like I was misrepresenting myself. She said as long as the color was different she didn't feel that was an issue at all.

Ooooh, I'm drooling over the Urbane scrubs. Just what I was thinking about! Not your traditional scrub, yet you still get the benifts of wearing "scrubs". Sweet!

This thread is so much fun! Keep the replies comin'!
