Induction for Big Baby
My client(with GD ,due 4/10,) is being harrassed by one of her docs to be induced. She went in to be checked after losing her mucas plug and having light contraction that went away , and the first thing the doc said while entering the room was "why havent you schedualed your induction yet? That baby is way too big!" My client told the doc that she already discussed this with the other docter and she said it was ok. Doc told her " Oh I'll have a talk with her about that" Continued to tell my client that they will induce her this weekend with CYTOTEC. She said No Way. Doc is saying she has no choice.
I'm thinking she does......Right? I mean this is Her Body.
She is very Head Strong and is not going to give up on this.
She is really, extremly upset. I am supporting her all the way. I just want to make sure that I am doing the right thing in supporting her decision not to induce.
I want everyone's opinion. I want to know what's the best thing I can do for her.
Thanks!

She does NOT have to be induced. She has the right to say no. Also, please tell her to allow no more internal exams, as some docs have been known to sweep membranes or even break waters without consent, they just say oops, there went your water, time to go to the hospital! Scary, but it happens with induction happy docs all the time.
Anyway, when is her due date? If she is less than 30 days, they cannot drop her as a patient. Her best bet is to refuse any more internal exams, and just wait until she goes into labor and show up at the hospital well into labor.
I'm sure others can add more, but I hope I helped some!

She ABSOLUTELY has a choice. Someone on a different forum I post to was induced early for big baby and GD. They said the baby was going to be 8.5lbs or something like that at 37 weeks and she turned out to be just UNDER 6 pounds!

http://www.aafp.org/afp/20010115/302.html
American Acd. of Family Physicians says that induction or c-section for suspected macrosomia is does not improve outcome for mom or baby.
Educate her on "informed refusal" and how to say "I hear that you want to induce...I understand you are worried that the baby will be too big...I DECLINE the procedure." PP is correct, they can not drop her without 30 days notice and the hospital will have to treat her if she shows up in labor (and declines a c-section) due to ETMALA. The only way the hospital could decline her is if they do not take one red cent of federal money.
Most of all, she can't go in saying "My doula showed me this study...." She has to own her decision based on seeing, understanding, and agreeing with the evidence. Sounds your momma is already more than willing to do that!

You have some great input here! Good luck to your mama! I hope she's strong enough to follow through with standing up for herself.

Does she have to stay with this doctor? I would be PISSED if a doctor told me I had to do something and had no choice in the matter, and I really wouldn't want him at my birth. Some doctors go off the deep end when a patient tells them no and he might do some nasty things just to make an example out of her.
That doctor sounds like a real jerk, I'm sorry your client is dealing with this. She needs to stand up for herself and hold her ground.

CYTOTEC? Seriously? wow. That is bad. Any doc that says they use cytotec to induce is not a doc you want to deal with. Ouch. Hopefully she'll labor beautifully all by herself (well and with you.) Good luck!

Cytotec
When I went 2 weeks over I went round and round with my doc because he wanted to use cytotec. I said "you are NOT putting a darn thing on my cervix. You are only aloud to induce with pit." So I had a medication free pit induced birth in around 12 hours with my Doula.
So, yes she TOTALLY has a choice!

Glad she is in labour now, hope all is well.
What is cytotec?
(I opted to induce my second son on my due date but NOT with pitocin. I was pretty sure my body was about ready to go into labour and I waited till 11 days overdue with my first son and he was 9lbs13oz and I knew the second was about the same size and I wasn't feeling brave enough to let him go post dates.
I asked my midwife to try the prostaglandin gel on the cervix induction and it worked well and got me to 4cm within 4 hours and then we opted for AROM to get his head to settle down properly because it was still floating.
Although my birth plan had said I didn't want to be induced I was happy with this because 1) It was my decision and 2) it allowed me to do all the rest naturally and he did come out at 9lbs13oz in the end as well.)
