"That's great" has become my phrase. I live in the land of planned c-sections, and "Thank goodness the OB was there to save her" and it's driving me ABSOLUTELY BATTY!!!!!!!!!! I say the mom and sister of one of my old customers today (I used to work at a coffee shop in town) and they told me that she had had her baby a couple weeks ago. Her water broke at 11pm, she went to the hospital at midnight , contractions started around 6am (prob with pit knowing the OBs around here), she was scheduled for an emergency c at 9am b/c she was "only" a 3, and had the baby by c section at 2pm. Some emergency, huh? And, as her mother said, "At least she didn't have to labor long" My response - "That's great" while biting my tongue hard enough to make it bleed lol. Oh well.... whatcha gonna do?
I feel your pain, Amy! I'll spare you the , but anytime I hear that someone is using Dr. _______ in town here, I just have to force myself to do the "smile and nod" routine. Ack!
Don't say "That's great!" because it is not. In situations like that, I'm much more likely to say something like "Interesting" or "are you OK? the recovery must have been rough". Something true that shows I'm listening adn I care, but I won't say "That's great" unless I mean it.
I'm with Utah, I don't say "that's great" anymore. I say similar thing like "interesting" "have you heard about ICAN?" or something like that.
It is really hard...just wait until it is a family member saying it.
Oh boy do I hear ya on this! It seems like now that people know I'm "into babies" (they just can't seem to get the "d" word out, so they say, "Since you're into babies now" lol) everyone tells me their horror stories! I finally had to tell my own mother, "You know, I really feel for so-and-so's family (people I've never met) but please stop telling me all these negative situations! No one focuses on what's happy, good, or "normal"! There I go again with the Sorry!
