Hello from Calgary,AB, Canada
Hello everyone!
I'm very happy to have found this great place!
I just want to say: I love and am fascinated with pregnancy and birth! I've been interested in pregnancy/childbirth since childhood - First Book that got me engrossed with it all was "Better Homes and Gardens Family Medical Guide" (lol - terribly outdated and clinical but was good enough for me when I was 9). lol, my mom provided me with lots of literature on 'reproduction'.
I am soon to start CAPPA certification for CLD(when it comes in the mail). I had wanted to be a nurse/midwife but I just hadn't the opportunity as of yet to go that route. So, I decided after some past experiences as "helping friend" to become a doula.
I have two kids, 12 and nearly 11 yrs now. Both were born at the same hosptital but one before healthcare cutbacks and one after health care cutbacks. I had my then husband by by side for both and I wished I could've afforded a doula then... I was a teenager! My family's doc delivered my babes (not too bad for an old man as he did try to avoid interventions). It was the nurses and students that drove me nuts - I just wanted to whack 'em to get them quit asking me questions!
My first child was a "star gazer" at first but then the doc used his hand and turned him. My second... well, I just should have stayed home... my daughters birth was easy... If I had had the proper support I wouldn't have gotten scared and lost some of my confidence a little. But her birth was great despite the hospital setting and obtuse nurses. My births would've been better with a doula.
Seen how things operate in the hospital and the "basic info" given to women at public health pg/childbirth classes... After all the observations, experiences and such... I am really feeling an urgency to learn more, get "the label" and educate and empower women about their Birth Process.
God Willing I will be successful.
In the Doula Sisterhood,
Sirena

 Sirena!
Wow...what a nice introduction you've given! It's nice to "meet" you! I'm Lori, a Certified Labor Doula through CAPPA. Like you, I've loved childbirth since a kid, so I know where you're coming from on that. Who knows? Maybe the CNM thing will work out for you in the future (never say never! ). Until then, you will LOVE being a doula! It's not always easy, but it is so very rewarding.
I'm so glad that you've decided to join us! Jump in and post and make yourself at home!

Hi Sirena, welcome to alldoulas! A powerful introduction but one thing is for sure, you sound like you know what you want to do and have a passion for it. I think that is really important. Glad to meet you and I hope you like it here.
It's good to see another doula from Canada, as well. I'm in Ontario and currently a SAHM to two girls (soon to be 3 of them!). I am DONA trained and have supported women for 4 years. I'm also the admin of alldoulas, let me know if you have any comments, suggestions or questions.

Hi everyone
Thank you! I'm glad to have the priviledge! I appreciate everyones knowledge and experience here.
After I mentioned that old book in my intro... I found that old book and read in it about labor and delivery.... OMG! We've come a long way! That old book told of archaic and barbaric methods of labor and delivery!
I received my required reading books for CAPPA yesterday! Gosh, Chapters ships fast. I hope my certification packet shows up really soon too.
