New in CO
Hi,
I recently began thinking about pursuing a career as a doula. I originally wanted to become a labor and delivery nurse, but $$ is tight and I can't afford two years of nursing school for a long time. Anyway, I figure that being a doula would be a great career option as well since I'd still get to work with moms and babies (and it would be a great assest if I ever do finish my nursing degree).
I joined this site to learn more about becoming a doula and I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of The Doula Book and The Birth Partner so that I start the reading requirements. I think I will go through DONA to get certified.
I hope to learn a lot from you all.

 addison!!
My name is Lori, and I'm a CAPPA Certified Labor Doula from Ohio. I am happily married and have two teen boys.
Like you, I had originally thought that I would pursue L&D nursing. Also like you, the $$ wasn't there and I also wasn't ready to commit to the years of schooling at the time. Now that I'm a Labor Doula, I just LOVE it!!! I think that you will, too!
Since then, my plans have changed somewhat. I want to continue to be a Labor Doula and possibly a certified Lamaze Instructor (LCCE) someday. Currently checking into that possiblity.... Whether or not you become a nurse in the future, I think that you would not regret having become a doula, and it would be invaluable if you should become a nurse! It is so very rewarding to attend to a family as they welcome their new little blessing! When mom says, "Thank you so much....I couldn't have done this without you"...well.....you just melt and it's like !!
Sorry so long! I sometimes ramble way too much!!! Welcome to the group!!

Hi Addison - to our community!
I hope you learn a lot from us as well. I keep meaning to get to work on the Aspiring Doula FAQs--if you have any specific questions, or know of some you think I could add to that document, please let me know! After being a doula for 4 years, it is sometimes difficult to think of the things new doulas do not yet know.
Anyways, I am a DONA trained (but never certified) doula of 4 years, am American but live in Ontario with my husband and our two kids. Currently pregnant with our third and due in August! I'm also the founder of alldoulas so let me know if there is anything you need help with! Glad to have you with us.
-Tiffany

Hi and Welcome!
I'm wondering, your avatar is chili peppers, does that mean your peppery?
This is a great group of Doula Sisters Tiffany has lots of wonderful downloads and templates and we're very supportive of each other.
My name is Jill and I live in Northern Calif. I'm a Doula working on my birth and post-partum certifications thru DONA. I'm considering doing my CLE through CAPPA and intend to apply to midwifery school next year. I have 5 children and was a La Leche League Leader for many years.
I also am knee deep in crabs! I'm working on the Crab Feed/Auction for my kids school, it's really making me
Again,
 WELCOME!
Jill

HELLO and welcome!! I also thought of becoming a L&D nurse initially but am now very happy to be a birth doula! I took my training through DONA and am waiting to hear from the certification commitee . I am the mother of two boys 3&1/2 & 2yrs and wife of a wonderful man-who by the way I overheard reccomending Dr Jack Newman's book to a pregnant friend of ours!!!

Well, that depends on who you ask Actually, I just really like chile peppers and southewestern type decor.
Thanks for the welcomes. It is so nice to see that there are several of you that have similar ambitions to me.
Tiffnay, I will definitely let you know about the FAQ if I think of anything.

I am a Bradley CBE, doula, 2nd year traditional midwifery student, wife of 17 years, homeschooling mother of two boys (ages 14 & almost 11), and all around busy, busy woman! I make my friends and family tired just thinking about all I do!
Anyway, hope you enjoy it here as much as I do.
From one newbie to another...
Amy

Rasberrymoondoula: I'm in Denver. It's quite a different world from Alamosa, which is a MUCH smaller community. I've only driven through Alamosa on my way to New Mexico. I'd be happy to answer any ?? though if you have them.

Welcome! I'm Val, I've been a doula for 11 years, certified with DONA for 9, with CAPPA for 3, and I'm a CCCE with CAPPA too. I live in Alabama, I homeschool my children, I'm a girl scout leader, and I run a few CAPPA programs too. Oh, and I'm working on my postpartum doula certification with CAPPA. I just can't get enough initials at the back of my name there. I just joined too, so welcome from a newbie.
Talk soon!
