If this is in the wrong spot feel free to move it, I never know where to post this stuff! I just know there have been some Lotus Birthers on AllDoulas so I have been pondering and wanted to discuss.
I'm planning a Lotus Birth for my baby due Feb 25. I've read a few websites on it and mostly what resounded with me was Jeannine Parvati Baker's phrase "All attachments will fall away of their own accord."
I was perusing for more info to give my mother since she is just astounded by this idea, and I came upon this link on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_Birth
In the link it says:
"Umbilical nonseverance, or Lotus Birth, is an informed choice option currently practiced by a minority of homebirth and hospital birth families [See the research of Sarah Buckley, M.D. and Int'l Midwife Robin Lim], and an increasingly popular continuing education topic for licensed midwives and certified nurse midwives in publications such as the magazine Midwifery Today and Mothering. Particularly compelling to these professionals is the reported absence of healthy neonatal weight loss and breastfeeding jaundice in lotus birth scenarios, as yet formally studied."
That quote really made me wonder how much the baby is actually receiving from the placenta and cord and for how long after birth. I know with many births midwives and OB's say it is normal for a newborn to lose weight in the first few days of life and then gain it back but this quote says that that weight loss has not happened with Lotus Birth. I'd be interested to hear more about what has been studied in regards to this. It doesn't seem like a coincidence to me that it takes approx 2-5 days for cord and placenta to detach and approx 2-5 days for mother's milk to come in. How do we know baby isn't receiving benefits from the placenta that gradually decrease until mothers milk can sustain them? How do we know that it isn't something from the placenta that most babies are missing when they become jaundiced?
If you had a Lotus Birth was your baby jaundiced? Any other thoughts?

Very interesting Sorry I have nothing to offer you, but I think there must be many benefits to Lotus that we aren't aware of.... it only makes sense. Best of luck!

That IS very interesting. I'd never made the connection between mother's milk and when the cord tends to naturally detach. Very intriguing, and I also wonder if there's a correlation. It would be great if there was some research done on this topic. I think it would be very enlightening!
That is very interesting! I also don't think it's just coincidence...I think it's just another area where we have gotten so far away from normal and natural that we've lost the benefits of nature taking its course.
Thanks for sharing this! I had never considered lotus birth before, but if I were to have another baby, this is something I would definitely research more!
Hey Samantha, I don't know if you read the CBI forums much since you did their training, but there was something on there not to long about Lotus Birthing. Oh was that you? There was some really good info on the site they linked to their message. This is something I definitely want to look more into for my next birth.
Please be sure to let us know how your LUC goes!

I don't visit the CBI forums often since they usually aren't very active from what I've seen, but I'll go check it out now.....

Well, I'VE decided, and he thinks he has some say in it When I brought it up he reacted the exact same way he did when I was pregnant with Henry and brought up not circing Henry. He seems to think I care about his "oh hell no not while I have any say in this" attitude. So I'll bring it up a few more times, and he won't put up an argument when we have a lotus baby come late summer.
(yes, this is how most decisions in my household are made )

Well we've had other threads about this.. Remember to use the search option at the top in the pink to see if there are any threads of the topic you're looking for.
I will move this to General Doula Discussion.

I don't know what my DH would say about a Lotus birth (though I know we've talked about it before...long time ago...because my doula had at least one lotus birth)...but fortunately, he pretty much leaves these kinds of decisions to me, because he knows that I am the one who's educated and trusts my judgment. We have some discussion, of course, but he pretty much just defers to me.

I will look at these threads again although I'm pretty sure I've seen them. I didn't mean for my post to be redundant, I just don't think I have ever seen anyone point out the correlation between the time it takes for natural cord separation and the time it takes for mother's milk to come in.
