Thumbs down Maternity clinic denies illegal use of placentas

http://www.miamiherald.com/business/story/835601.html

Quote:
A press release from the Florida Department of Health said its Unlicensed Activity Unit had investigated the center for 10 months. ``It was learned that women who had given birth at the center were being provided placenta pills as a prophylactic measure in order to mitigate or prevent post partum depression.''
Daniels said Friday that the allegations were utterly wrong. ''This is big brother at its worst.'' She said that the center saves dried parts of the placentas of women who give birth at the center and puts them in bags to give the patients, who can do with them what they want. ``They're always clearly marked as to the mother is.''

As a former federal agent who did search warrants, I have to say that would not be a fun one to carry out. Especially if you find the placenta and have to bag it as evidence... Now, if the center were doing it legitimately, using only that mothers placenta for her, then how awesome. I would hae LOVED to ship my placenta somewhere to have it encapsulated...but alas it is sitting in deep freeze waiting to be planted next spring under a tree...

I am not quite sure how drying the placentas and giving them to women to do as they please is any different, or any less wrong; unless of course these women are getting their own placentas, they are a biological hazard.

This is one of those sticky subjects. I'm not sure that they have any laws on their side protecting them from what they are doing nor do I know that there are laws prohibiting them either. I hope that things can be settled in a fair and appropriate manner. And I do think that this may bode ill for those of you who do encapsulation especially if lawmakers decide that this is a no-no. Something to keep your eyes on for sure.
I am not opposed to a woman requesting her placenta, it is hers, and doing w/it what SHE wishes. I'm not sure I like the idea of a center automatically preparing dried placenta and handing it out to every woman though. But if the woman is comfortable with it, than so be it.

This birth center is about 2-3 hours from me. We're following it closely.

You can still do it yourself, or ship it to someone to do it.
