Placenta pills on Time's website
Time has an article up on placenta pills. At least it's exposure?
http://www.time.com/time/health/arti...908194,00.html
It includes a link to what is apparently a 1933 article on the use of placental extracts to prevent infectious disease. I feel like I'm missing something. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/ar...753770,00.html

a friend sent this to me the other day. i was torn between yelling "stop acting like a 12 year old boy, you giant wussy" vs. laughing histericly. did you watch the video? you can tell he is totally cracked out on new daddy lack of sleep and just saying the first crazy thing that enters his mind.
as a "placenta lady" myself, i guess all publicity is good publicity but i'll just kind of watch and see for a while what the fallout is.

while we are on the topic of hilarious things written about placenta pills....
check out this super funny (but not as negative) blog about this food critic's experience with her encapsulated placenta.

I know Jodi of Placenta Benefits fame and I'm glad for her sake that it's getting exposure, even if it's not the BEST information...

By the way, I think placenta pills are fabulous! I had mine done with Oliver and got 136 pills, nowhere near as many as I needed. It'll be fun to schlepp them around until menopause.

How does one become a "placenta lady"? Is there a special course that one takes to become trained?
I think I would like to learn how to do this - I love placenta! It's one of the awesome parts of birth for me.
I know, I know...I'm weird!

Beth, I dont' ever want to catch you apologizing for loving placentas on All Doulas again. You don't need to! That's what's so great about talking to other doulas!

jody selander, founder of placenta benefits info, has an online training course to become a "certified placenta specialist." some of the pros are that she has good information on both the actual placenta encapsulation and on best practices regarding health codes, legal issues and OHSA information. some of the cons (imo) are that its kind of $pendy and she has this strange territorial thing where she will only train/certify one person per area.
i researched and studied on my own and got a bunch of tips from my midwife who used to do the old school way and my friend who practices chinese medicine and knew a bunch about zi he che (placenta) medicine.
someday, i am going to write up detailed online instructions (with pictures) showing how i do placenta prints, placenta encapsulation and make homeopathic placenta remedy so that everybody - moms, doulas, midwives, maybe even a fringe OB - can be informed and empowered to make their own placenta art and medicines without being bottlenecked and limited to only one "certified specialist" per area. i'll let you know when i get it done.

She'll certify more than one in an area if there's a demand. THere's at least 2 of us here in Philly, if not more.
