I'm really wanting to have my placenta encapsulated after this little one arrives for many reasons, but the closest specialist is 6hrs from me and is in training (not that I think that matters). The website I visited ( http://placentabenefits.info/index.asp ) offers certification in placenta encapsulation and I am REALLY wanting to become certified, and preferably in time to encapsulate my own placenta (or at least be trained in time and I could use my placenta and my SIL's as my certifying encapsulations). My only real concern with this program is that in the cost section, she has $29.99/mo and $300/yr listed for a web page with their organization as aprt of the certifying and membership fees. This really turns me off to them. I wrote her an email and am awaiting a reply, but I just don't think that should be required for your certification! My husband is a webmaster and SEO expert, so why pay that??? Do you think I misunderstood? (it HAS happened before! ) Yes, agree that having my name listed on their site would be a HUGE bonus, but it's not going to make or break me as far as wanting to certify. What do y'all think? Any hints? Know of any other organizations that certify/teach this? I'm running out of time and don't want to waste this opportunity!
TIA

I am wanting my placenta encapsulated this time, too, Ash! I'm thinking I will do it myself, and my midwife said she will help me. I need to find a dehydrator for a good price. Was going to just use my oven, but my midwife discouraged that, as she said she believes that even at the lowest possible temp, it would destroy beneficial things.
This is just another thing on my list that I feel like I'm running out of time in preparing for!!!
I meant to....then my 2yr old got into the candy drawer ....yes....small as it is.....we have a candy drawer!

Kristin, we'll together! That website up there sells a dehydrator in their shop. The price looked reasonable, but, then again, I've never actaully priced any I think it's awesome that your MW is going to help you!

I thrift shop A LOT and I almost always see dehydrators at Goodwill or Salvation Army thrifts. I think it's one of those appliances that lots of people buy and then never use and end up giving away. At my local thrifts, they usually cost something like $5.99. Just an idea!
I've encapsulated several placentas, and really, as long as you're conscious about what you're doing and don't get grossed out super easily, it's not rocket science, and it's really fun! I took pictures of the process which you can see at http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/inde...albumId=849525

That's what my midwife said...well, she suggested yard sales. Now, if I ever had time to go to a yard sale... Maybe I'll try to hit a few this Saturday, since it's our first free Saturday in forever! (And only because I decided not to go to the homeschool convention this year that I go to every year...because I need a free Saturday!!! )

I meant to suggest craigslist too! I bet a lot of folks have dehydrators just sitting in their junk room or garage and would love to sell 'em for $10 or $15...

The cost of the training is $195
The cost of the specialist starter supplies is $250 (an NO you don't have to buy this kit, you can piece it together)
The annual fee is $29.99 a month OR $300/year (pay for 10 months get 2 free, essentially)
The monthly/annual fee is not just for your name being listed on PBi, but 'locking' in your territory rights. She will not, unless you approve otherwise, train more than 1 specialist for the area (which is SO nice). placentabenefits.info receives more than 100,000 hits per months from around the world.
Has it been worth it?.... yes.
I have received calls from women in California asking to paypal me the fee for their sisters, cousins (etc) here in St Louis to do their placenta. All the 'advertising' and 'education' I do here locally doesn't feed someone else's pocket book.
You are also given a associate web link for the PBi Store and you earn 12% from any purchases (that includes the DIY kits)
Besides that she has laid out business forms, logos, pamphlets, business cards. You will start out with an established business image. you'll also get a PBi email address. Not only that, when other PBi specialist get media attention in their area, you will get some residual affect of their efforts too!
I had my placenta encapsulated in early 2008 by Jodi, but didnt do her certification course til this spring. I am 3 months post certification and have 6 placentas done or scheduled at $250 each. It has paid for itself in 3 months! (the profit margin for each placenta will surprise you, btw! Let me just say, it's worth it!)
There is no one else doing any similar training or certification. Yes, you could learn to do this on your own, independently, but it's totally worth having an established name and education to back you up.
There are a few of us around here that are Placenta Encapsulation Specialist. Ask questions, please, were all happy to help.

Brie!!!!!! AWESOME explanation; thank you! I feel MUCH better about that and part of my wanting to do her course was because, as both you and she stated in her website, the name pops up EVERYWHERE when you type in the search terms! Ok....I'm excited......
THANK YOU!!!! And thank you to all that have replied, and DON'T STOP!!! I can't WAIT to learn more!!!
Oh, and Doula Hara, those pics were fantabulous! Thanks!

Okay, silly question here, but you can use any old food dehydrator, right? I have been interested in this myself for awhile and there is no one in my area that offers it.

it's totally not rocket science. i mean, there are some important things to know and items to gather but i really think that every woman who is able should know how to do this because it is so valuable and available.
naturalbirther, if you want to learn asap, you can pm me and i will give you my phone # and talk you through the whole process in detail and not charge you a red cent.
as far as dehydrators go, i have 2 different dehydrators (sometimes i need both!) that normally run around $60 new but i got one free from a friend and one on sale at fred myers (krogers) for $40. i think the PBi dehydrator is waaaaay more expensive than that, which probably contributes to the higher cost for materials. they both work great, don't over-cook like an oven would, and both are easy to bleach and run through the dishwasher (this part is key). actually, one of mine looks like it is exactly the same as the one doula hara used in her process (nice pictures btw).

I am considering this as well and have already inquired to be trained. There isn't anyone in this area doing it and lots of interest. Thanks for the info!
