i'm interested to see who out there is self-taught to some degree, who is PBi trained or who was taught by someone else? also, i'm curious how you first learned about it and what was your initial reaction.
I've been reading up on it a lot, but haven't actually prepared any yet. I think I'll be going the self-taught route though.
I first heard about it on the Mothering forums when I was pregnant with my first and thought some of it was pretty icky, but interesting. I ended up with severe PPD after that pregnancy and decided I'd have my placenta encapsulated the next time. I continued reading more and wondered if there were any extra benefits to consuming the placenta without 'cooking' it and decided to have it both ways.
So that's how I went from "that's pretty gross" to having my placenta smoothies and placenta 'happy' pills and considering offering that service to others
I've been considering it in addition to other services. I did a google search and came up with PBi and would love to take their course but found out that they only certify one person per state and my state has one person already (our esteemed moderator for this forum ). So, we will see how I come to do this. Maybe self study on the net or find other instructions. I've never heard of it before until a thread on another forum I go to had a discussion about the many uses of placenta.

nope, it's not me. wendy at vivante midwiffery beat me to it. wendy has given PBi jodie the ok to train a couple other people in the area though - it might be worth at least checking into it to see if they are all full.
what other forum was that with the placenta discussion? mothering.com or someplace else?
OHHHH, see I thought it was you, LOL I'm glad that she has let some others have the training too. I would like to but if not, I'm ok with that. there's so many other ways to help mommas out there. I'm in awe of what can and is being done with placentas. I would have NEVER in a million years thought to make art with it. yeah, mothering.com and kellymom.com (a little more on mothering tho)
PBi is revamping the training so I do have my info in there. I really look forward to this forum and it getting bigger with ideas.

You already got the answer, but if anyone else is wondering, it's one per area, not state, and the specialist decides what her area is. And it's a reason why I felt paying PBi was worth the expense, with the business name she's created, PBi is a go to site for placenta encapsulation and when someone in MY area clicks her site, I know they're being referred to me and not 100 other people in my area like if you were clicking on DONA's site looking for a doula in New York City or LA.
These 3 Members Say "Thanks!" to Brie+3 For This Post:
Through doula work, I've always heard tidbits about placenta consumption and some of its benfits, such as for PPH and general health benfits from the nutrients the placenta contains...I had also heard about placenta prints, planting them with a sappling to nourish the tree, etc. It was here, though, that I learned about placenta encapsulation and specifically recently when mrslifeofreilly posted her success with consuming her placenta! My SIL's midwife also mentioned placenta encapsulation to her and my SIL wants to have it done, but the midwife didn't/doesn't know of anyone who does it. That made me realize that, not only could I help myself and loved ones, but other new moms, as well.
I do plan on doing Pbi's course but would like to start here; learning as much as possible from all of you and having the benefits of Pbi's cert program and especially the listing on the website to supplement.
Thank you, Raeben and Brie and everyone else who is contributing to helping us grow our knowledge on placentas! They are really an amazing thing; a true gift that too many of us (and our society as a whole), simply toss out with the trash!
Oh! And I really want to learn to make placenta prints, too!

I've been teaching prenatal classes since the late 80s and began doula-ing here and there not long after, so it's hard to know when I first heard about this. I heard about lotus birth right from the beginning, and we used to joke about eating the placenta - like stewing it and feeding it to your midwife - as a fringe, uberhippy practice. I became vaguely aware of placenta encapsulation somewhere along the line.
Several years ago I was contacted by someone from one of the local tv stations who wanted to do a piece on it. I told her that I'd heard that there were people - probably tradition Chinese medicine practitioners - who would do it for you, but that I couldn't refer her to anyone in particular. I don't know where I heard that. But my curiosity increased after that contact, and when I heard people talking about it here I decided I wanted to get involved. So, a slow, gradual awareness developing over the years, but bursting into flower after being fertilized by this forum, really. :-))
Which is cool, because I wasn't feeling very connected to or involved with Alldoulas before this, but now I can't wait for the "Placenta Medicine Update" emails to land in my inbox. It's fun after all these years to have a new interest and a new service to offer.
When I first saw a placenta after a birth center birth, I was captured!! I just wanted to touch and look at it for a long time and observing it HOWEVER I didnt know that you can eat it. I learned about that here and I fell in love with the idea of providing that service to my clients. I'm more into Placenta Encapsulation. I'm just waiting now for another certification to pop up that's not PBi =/.... waiting for that day =)..also I will be taught by two other doulas and a lot of self educating will be going on too =)! I will offer it after I get trained by them. I'm praying that they dont change their minds.

I am curious as to why you are not wanting to go with PBi? I am trying not to as well and trying to self-teach and find workshops in my state.

I'm self taught. I did a lot of reading first and talked to other women who did it, mostly Midwives. I looked into PBi, but did not like the quota part and paying for business cards and advertisment and all that. I like having my own business, my own cards, advertisments, title, etc. I heard she has changed that now, but I'm still not comfortable with her business.

I've learned from many doulas that the business model is just messed up and I don't want to deal with that. I want to help mommies and not think about how much I need to charge her so that both PBi and I benefit with the cost. Just want to have a flat fee and certify and not deal with the rest of the bureacracy (cant spell today). Not going to lie, I do want the material to see what she is teaching to us doulas but I'll just wait and ask other doulas who are seasoned =)!!
