what to do with placenta prints?
so for those of you who have done placenta prints for yourself or others, what did you do with them afterwards? are they framed above the fireplace or stashed away somewhere with your other kid's baby teeth and first hair cuttings? did you like how they turned out or was the end product kind of underwhelming? if you do display your prints, what is people's reaction to them?

I printed mine to wrapped canvas and it's displayed in my living room. No one would guess that it's a placenta print -- looks more like abstract tree art ...

Um, I used the cheap 99cent acrylic paints from the craft store. And my husband sprayed some clear sealer on it afterwards. The placenta is still in my freezer!

so comfy asked if i'd ever considered selling my prints. i had never thought about it before and did wonder about issues like - it's somebody else's print and their blood. i thought about making high-res copies of some really good prints and then having those printed up... but still the question remains, who would want them besides me, comfy, and maybe a couple of midwives?

I would!
My midwife has a really cool black and white photograph in her office that at first glance looks like a tree, but it is actually a photograph of a placenta! So awesome!

So you guys actually use paint for the placenta prints? That doesn't cause any issues with encapsulating/eating later?

yeah, using paint would be contraindicated for any medicinal consumption of the placenta. if it is just going to be buried afterwords though, paint wouldn't be as big of a problem.

When I have mine done after baby is born, I'm going to frame it and hang it in our family bedroom next to the belly cast.

oh, you should think about pasting one print on (or in) the belly cast itself!

well, assuming you make several prints, take one that was on a smaller sized, thinner (like, probably not water-color thickness) paper and apply it to the belly, either inside or out. you could use a spray adhesive to get it to stay on but you would have to smooth out the edges since it would crinkle around the curvature of the belly. or you could use modge podge or similar product to paste it on there - i would definitely give the print a coat of artists fixative before i did this though.
a lot of people put a coat of plaster of paris on their belly cast to make it stronger and smoother. if mama was doing this the print could just be smoothed onto the wet plaster and the edges of the paper gently plastered over for a smoother look.
