placenta bummer

just got a call from a family who contacted me in aug to do their placenta. the baby was born, the hospital said they would freeze it for the 8 day pathology wait time but when they tried to get it on friday, they were told everyone was gone for the holiday weekend and they couldn't pick it up till tuesday. well, today is tuesday (day 11) so they call to see if they can pick it up - guess what - it has been in the refrigerator, not freezer this whole time!

they are super bummed and are still trying to figure out if they can use it. at this point dad wants to still pick it up and bring it over so that i can examine it and we can decide what to do. oh boy!

now, i have seen a couple really good looking/feeling placentas that are a week old - we talk about the pros and cons and i tell the family it is up to them. 11 days though... i think we are getting to the outer limits of usability here. one other thing is that someone told them that it would be stored in the morgue - all together now - "EWWWWW!" i don't know if this is true or not but but i swear if i open up that placenta container and there is ghosts involved in addition to everything else...

If there is a ghost, it'd make for an AWESOME story.
I hope it can be salvaged. That would really really stink (literally) if not!!!

haunted placenta medicine - just in case the regular placenta gig wasn't strange enough for the general public. **X-files theme plays in the background**

what if your placenta has been frozen for, like, a year? Do you think it would still make good medicine?

hmm, how do you decide if it is still good? That would make me nervous. Is there a danger in ingesting bad placenta after dehydration?
