Delayed Cord Clamping

So, is it REALLY necessary to delay clamping until the cord stops pulsating to have a good placenta for encapsulation? I'm putting together my services description and I want to be clear on this. Some people are on the "who cares" side for the benefits to the newborn (and from my research this seems to be because the science is saying it's kind of 50/50). SO, what is the purpose of delaying cord clamping for encapsulation purposes?

Hmm, maybe some of the more experienced can chime in, but the only thing I can think off is it will make the process easier/ less blood to rinse out before steaming.

It definitely makes things easier b/c there's less blood to drain, but it's not a requirement.

yeah, it's not necessary - even a c-section placenta initially engorged with fetal blood will make better medicine than not doing it at all. but i personally feel that there is a big difference on an energetic level between a placenta that has completed its job vs. one that clamped early. yes, it also does make the work a bit easier - only 5 minutes rather than an hour draining the placenta.

it is just one of those things that i feel is pretty important for the greater well being of the baby. talking about the benefits to their placenta medicine is just an extra way to have that educational conversation.

Raeben, Do you have an article to reference the benefits of delayed clamping? Maybe two? in my searches this morning I was able to find a lot of info...but most of it was either on the fence or advocated a set time limit.

Try reading Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering. Lots of very good info in there about the benefits of delayed cord clamping from what I have heard. My reading has convinced me of the benefits of delayed cord clamping - higher iron levels in the baby, easier resusitation if needed, baby gets 30% more blood volume. Bottom line to me is that the placenta was not designed to be immediate separated from the baby, or it would automatically detach itself
