you want to use good artists quality (low acid) paper. don't get anything with a gloss to it or it won't pick up a great print. newsprint or really thin-weight paper won't work very well either. i use a variety of papers (each placenta seems to respond a little differently to different papers depending on how fresh they are and how they were stored) when i do prints. i mostly use a 70lb weight drawing paper with a good "tooth" to it. i also have been liking 100lb vellum drawing paper as well as watercolor paper.
even for a smallish placenta, you will need the paper to be at least 11 x 14 inches, larger if you plan on framing some of the prints. i recently did some really nice prints on 2 x 3 foot vellum paper for an artist mama. the bigger size allowed me to do both maternal and fetal prints on one paper. here is an image link.
