I read this in midwifery today.. it reminded me of the placenta topic we were talking about on another thread.. and Aussie of course!
It's important that a baby's cord be left alone until the placenta is birthed. Once the placenta is in a bowl, … then place one clamp about an inch away from the baby's belly and press it together until you hear a "click"—then you know it's locked. Cut on the side away from the baby's belly (you can leave another inch on the cut side of the clamp.) Then, leave the umbilical cord alone—use no peroxide or alcohol to clean it. It will dry up and fall off in about six days. It's important that no blood seeps out of the cord once it's clamped or tied off. The plastic clamps have teeth that prevent seepage.
now..is lotus birth only practiced outside the U.S?
No, there is actually quite a large movement of Lotus Birthing going on in the US and has been since the 70's. Before that it was once seen as mainstream in Western society and is even referenced in the Bible.
People didn't start cutting cords until relatively recently in US history.

That's why we call it the present.
Every once in a while this shallow world surprises us with depth.
First thing they usually do in hospital births is clamp that sucker off. Too impatient to wait. Sad. Sad. Sad. Just leave it aloneee!

I am curious to have the reference as to lotus birthing mentioned in the Bible (for clients and my own knowledge) TIA.
This whole thread reminds me of something that happened during my last client's birth......my client told her doctor that she wanted to wait at least five minutes before clamping the cord or until it stopped pulsating.....The doctor (I guess that is what one would call her) wanted to know WHY??? . She acted like she had no idea why someone would want to do that and then my client and I had to eplain why the they wanted it done! Don't get me started here!! Oh -- and she wanted to know why my clients wanted to delay the eye ointment for an hour.......and again, it had to be explained by my client that they wanted that time to bond with the baby and the baby could see better WITHOUT the eye ointment. And the doctor said in question....."the eye ointment would make his eyes blurry?" Can anyone here guess how upset I was????

So was this her first time at birth, or what!
My birthplan states that I want a delayed cord cutting...the dr's that have seen it have been totally cool and explained how they would go about it...I just hope I don't get some random dr in there when I start labor!

Totally naive question here, but what about if the parents are planning to store or donate the cord blood? Im guessing then that it has to be clamped immediately?

I would love for her to have said to the doctor, "If I knew you were this uneducated when it came to birth I would have had someone else deliver my baby!"
i read about the significant diffrence just waiting 2 minutes to cut the cord can make. Most hospitals say "its hospital policy" which is bull. i've discussed this with my client, and her midwive says they'll cut the cord asap. but were going for the 2 minute mark at least!
