Placenta essence - anyone heard of this?
This is directions on how to basically turn the placenta into almost a decoction and have it available for postpartum and beyond.
Anyone heard of this? I'm just wondering if it would work.

...but it has been said that it works through the energy of the placenta water and the vibrational properties of it. Many women that have had PPD swear by it.

I've never heard of it before becoming a doula, but since becoming a doula, the topic seems to surface from time to time. Digesting the placenta in any form is not for me, but at least I can logically understand why some do it. The hormonal aspects make sense, but when they start going into "energy" and "vibrational properties" of placenta water, however, I think that is really abstract & weird; their reasoning for why it works loses credibility for me.

This is too funny because I was just at a meeting last night where women were talking about doing this. I don't think I had heard of using it this way before.

I first heard of this in a book my friend had when we were in high school. I think it was a Jeannine Parvati ( her!) book. I think it is definatly interesting and something I may try (just to see if it works! ha!) in the future.

I'd say that this would be the only way I'd ever consume placenta, and it would only have 50% vodka in it because I would have to drink the other 50% vodka in order to consume the placental essence!
Lori, I think that they are getting the whole 'energy' thing from homeopathy which indeed does work that way. Only this concoction is NOT homeopathy and doesn't at all appeal to my senses-any of them. And I'm not real sure that there is enough of the placenta in there to do any good. I mean 4 hours isn't really long enough to extract any beneficial properties from much of anything I wouldn't think. Other than the blood, that will come out into the vodka easily I'd guess. <<shrug>> But hey, if you think that you need to drink the stuff then why not?? Pour it into OJ and you could have a placenta screwdriver.

The last family I worked for had tinctures made from all of their daughters placentas. Every time they would begin to get sick, they would feed their own placenta tincture to them. I was with them for about a year caring for their children, and I really began to trust in the tincture's effectiveness. And its hard to say its placebo when the one with the runny nose is two and after an afternoon of placenta application her symptoms clear up.
That said, I haven't done any outside research. I'm interested in learning more for sure.

That made me laugh. I think the vodka has more to do with any perceived results than the placenta does. Placebo effect anyone?
I did have a client who is very into Chinease medicine who dehydrated her placenta and put it into caplet form for consumption postpartum. She originally tried to mix the placental powders in her morning drink but found the taste too strong to stomach.

personally, i believe it and am doing it after my own upcoming birth! do i have proof that it will help ward off PPD? no personal accounts. do i believe in the benefits of placental consumption to regulate hormones? absolutely!!! i don't care if it's a placebo...all it requires is a little bit of work & a few droppers full of essence (like the bach flower essences). i'll let you know how it goes.....

I actually just printed out this recipie last week. I plan on making placenta essence and dehydrating and encapsuling the remainder of my placenta. I'm open to anything that can help me recover faster and help prevent ppd. Most animals consume the placenta after birth and I think there is a reason for that. But I could not bring myself to take a bite out of the placenta unless it was a life or death hemmorage situation.
