Recipes for sitz or recovery soup...?

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone has recipes for sitz baths and "recovery" soup?? Any help would be great as I might have my first pp client and would like to have some special goodies for her.

Thanks!!

I think I was supposed to give these to someone a month or so ago... If it was you, I apologise! Momma-brain!

Sitz can be made into sachets (herbs) or used to soak mama-pads (infused).
You want to look for an herb like comfrey.
The Mothercare website has a few sitz bath recipes (click underlined link).

I like to infuse about 1/4 cup of dried comfrey leaf in 1 quart of boiling water. Let it cool, then soak some mama-pads in it for 1-2 hours. Wrap each one up and put it into the freezer, then mama can use them inside her underwear. Put a paper towel between the pad and her skin for added comfort while still allowing the comfrey to soak in well.

Alternatively, you can add this infusion to a shallow bath for mama to sit in, or wrap comfrey in a small organza sachet and add it to the warm bath water.

Another "sitz recipe" from an old issue of Mothering Magazine that is really, really simple can be found here.

In "Childbearing Year", Susun Weed recommends using herbs like yarrow, rosemary, golden seal, oak bark, witch hazel, sea grate bark, and myrrh specifically for healing perineal tears. She also cautions that if you have stitches you should limit yourself to one sitz bath a day.

As for recovery soup, my postpartum menu is top secret, LOL! Sorry! You can probably find something online that will hopefully suit your needs.

Not a sitz recipe (or soup) but...I give all my moms a pretty jar of epsom salt with birch oil for adding to a postpartum bath. Both are great for sore, achy muscles...

Recovery Soup
I usually make mommas a soup with some of the following
Tomato Base
Onions
Garlic
Carrots
Nettles
Artichokes
White beans
Sea Salt
Vegan Bullion
Basil- fresh
Then I add different stuff for the season, squash, green beans, etc...

herbal bath

The herbal bath I used with my kids (recipe from midwives) and I SWEAR by it contains these herbs:
1 oz comfrey
1/2 oz uva ursi
1/2 oz shepherds purse
1 oz chamomile (optional)
I had to bring these to a boil in a pot of water, simmer for an hour then strain. The liquid left filled 1 and 1/2 mason jars. I freezed it then brought it out once labour started.

Use 2 cups liquid in 1st bath, 1 cup in next bath.

I loved it, never felt my stitches though I only had a few and my babies loved it too. The cords fell off within days of birth.
Take care!
Denise

sitz bath...

Hi again,
I should also say, about the herbal bath recipe I provided, that you can use 1/4 cup in a small sitz bath for tender perineum...

When I had dd, and I also had an epesiotomy, I used the little peri bottle that they gave me from the hospital for cleansing and this was my life saver!
Warm water and Tea Tree Oil-that's it.

Tea Tree Oil is naturally antiseptic, antifungal, and soothes pain greatly. When the pain was really bad, I put the tea tree oil on cotton and applied it directly. It also helped to douse the witchhazel pads that they sent me home with with the tto and wear them.
