I started doing overnights when my son was about 9 months old. I had my husband give him bottles of breastmilk while I was gone and I'd pump while at work.

I only did backup a couple of nights a week here and there. It was hard at first for my son. But he's a year old and handling it much better.

My husband is really good though. The baby would fall asleep in our bed with him and I'd find them both crashed out in the morning.

How old is your DC? My DD is 22 months and still nursing like a maniac, but she can go all day without it if she has to. I won't be doing overnights, and plan on only taking 1 client at a time for now (provided I can find some!) and I'm going to be teaching a couple of classes each month.

My 3 year old is still nursing all the time, except when I am away with mommies. Just make sure you leave lots of extra milk/food/distractions. It can be done, just make sure to pack your pump, you never know when you will return home and being engorged is uncomfortable.

Best wishes....

I have found my guy (17 months) just knows what mama has and what daddy has. He won't go to sleep with me without nursing, because that is our routine, but with daddy, no problem -- they can lay together in bed and Jonas falls asleep.

Same with so many other things. I attended my first birth when he was 5 months -- I was gone for 17 hours and he did fine. I was able to come home once to nurse him. In hindsight, it was too early for me -- it was a difficult labor, mom went kind of wack-o, and I resented being there. But Jonas did fine . I did some pp doula work regularly when he was about 10 months old -- 5 hours a night, five nights a week, for a single mom of twins. I was gone from 7-midnight, and he did fine getting to sleep with daddy. I would just crawl into bed, snuggle up next to him, he would ake to latch, and then we would fall asleep. i found it mush more easy to handle than birth doula work .
