South Africa to host International midwifery congress
Johannesburg, South Africa, 08/11 - South Africa has won the bid to host the 29th triennial Congress of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) in 2011, the Health Ministry said here.
It said in a statement the ICM Council that met recently in Brisbane, Australia, gave South Africa the nod over Argentina and Canada, among other countries that put up bids.
"This means that Durban would play host to the next ICM congress in 2011, where approximately 1,700 representatives from around the world would be meeting to debate views on global midwifery and maternal and neonatal health issues," the statement added.
The Ministry said it would continue to support and work closely with the Society of Midwives of South Africa in the build-up to the meeting, "not only for its success, but also to ensure a further strengthening of the midwifery profession and advancing the Millennium Development Goals."
The ICM represents more than 85 member associations in 72 countries.
