Ontario to add 50 new midwife positions

TORONTO -- The Ontario government is boosting the ranks of the province's midwives.

Health Minister George Smitherman says the province will spend nearly $14 million to create 50 new midwife positions in an effort to address the growth of midwifery in the province.

Smitherman says the funds will serve 1,600 mothers and their children.

With the additional 50 positions, Ontario will have up to 356 registered midwives serving more than 11,000 women annually in clinics, hospitals and homes.

Elana Johnson, president of the Association of Ontario Midwives, says the new jobs will mean better care for mothers and their babies.

The funding will also cover an increase in midwifery fees and expenses after a new deal was reached between the Association of Ontario Midwives and the government in December.

A government study has indicated that births attended by midwives shorten hospital stays for mothers and newborns.
