Code Word Red

At my prenatal appointments I always ask for a code word for when they really want an epidural and are not just asking for more support from partner or me by saying "I can'd do this, I want something".

One of my clients has been putting so much thought into her word. So much that I was starting to wonder if I was going to know it before birth. I liked they were really discussing it and putting so much thought into it. On Friday I also let her know again it is just a word for us to use to give us an indication she is serious, so she doesn't have to worry about it too much just let me know a word she won't otherwise say.

Well she emailed me her word tonight. Her code word is "RED". She also said she understands CODE RED may mean something, so she will be sure to just say RED.

She included when she thinks of RED she imagines it's intensity and thinks she'd have to be in pretty intense pain to have to use her code word.

The problem I see is RED said is also READ. I wonder if she will ever be asked did you read something and she would reply yes "I read it." Would that in any way trigger thoughts of RED for epidural to her???

So my question to you is.... with as much thought as she put into it, do I point out the RED/READ to allow her to possibly consider chainging in preperation of off chance it comes up. Or just keep quiet and thank her for letting me know her word.

I am leaning towards keeping quiet.... your thoughts?

Oh another thing I thought of with it... would seeing the color red cause any thoughts...hmmm... I think I will try to avoid the rainbow technique with her.

I think she will be able to make her thoughts known perfectly well. No need to mention the possible confusion. I don't think you will be confused at all.

too I wouldn't bring it up, b/c she might not even think of it without you saying something kwim? Like if someone asks me 'have you read...' I don't think of the color at all. And when I'm in labor I can barely think beyond 'how do I get through this contraction' kwim? So I don't think I'd be picking up on read vs. red or anything like that if it was me. hth!
