So since my current clients have chosen not to take childbirth classes (no GOOD classes close to them), I told them that I would try to cover some extra "education" type stuff in our 2nd prenatal. It's coming up next week.
What would you advise me to be sure to cover? What would you do if your client decided not to take CBE and asked you to fill a bit of that gap? (They didn't ask me to do it, FTR...I offered after they made the decision. I really want to prepare them as best I can...I probably should have offered this extra service for an extra COST, but I didn't.
Tips? Anyone have a prenatal meeting outline for the "educational" stuff? Our first prenatal was AWESOME! She and her husband both talked a lot and asked a lot of questions...and made some great comments and observations! With the info I gathered on what they want more information on and what their feelings are about birth and what their fears/concerns are, etc...I am going to put together more of the educational stuff and the birth plan plan and the planning/preparation for the birth...any ideas anyone has to offer would be GREAT! TIA!
Interventions, Sections, pain medication options, breathing patterns, positions for labor and pushing. See where that leads you. If they are asking questions then they can lead the discussion, just start it off.
Otherwise it sounds like you are doing a good job.
If you got in an elevator on the 30th floor with a pregnant mom, she was in early labor and she told you that she didn't take childbirth classes and could you tell her what she needed to know - what are the key points that you want to make to her in the time it took that elevator to get to the bottom.....
You could use those points as a starting point for where to begin!

Thanks, Dorothy! I just saw this post, and I immediately scribbled 10 points that I would be sure to cover. I might use that as an ending "remember these things" to our meeting. To sum everything up. I think this time we are all expecting to do some more "hands on" things and formulate the birth plan from the worksheet mom filled out for me. I'm putting up another post about that; if anyone has birth plan outlines or examples, that would be great. It's so hard for me to keep it to one page. LOL
Christy,
Wow! That's great! Looks like there are several places that we could adapt that handout for our particular geographical area. Great info to have @ your fingertips!!

Glad you all find it helpful! I came across this right after I signed on my first client and I have to say it saved me a lot of stress! Even if you don't use it with the client it is nice to have it to refer to later to make sure you've covered everything. The entire site is fantastic, actually!
