At the interview before you're hired? I pretty much stick to when are you due and where are you planning on having the baby. Other than that I just listen to them and answer their questions.

I ask the when are you due, where are you birthing, why do you want to hire a doula, what do you expect from the doula your hire, how do you see the doula's role, what was your previous birth experience (if any)
I have a list I use...If you'd like it PM me..glad to share.

I agree, after the nuts-and-bolts questions (who, what, how, when, and where!), Why are you hiring a doula and What are your expectations and any previous birth experiences have spawned really good conversations.

Questions of Clients

This may just be my training showing through but I think that "Tell me about how you envision a doula helping you (and your partner) in this birth" will provide you more information than Why are you hiring a doula? You will then hopefully get a picture of what they envision the doula's role to be and their anticipated (active or passive) role in creating the birth they are hoping for. This could help in determing client-doula "fit".
