Book Recommendations

I have a client due in March who is an RN. She is really not crazy about taking a lamaze or childbirth class because she really thinks she will be bored and she knows how the class will be taught at the hospital she is going to and she doesn't think she can keep her mouth shut if she goes to it. Her husband on the other hand would like to attend one because he really knows nothing about childbirth. Does anyone have a good book for dad to read that will help him know what to expect? He is currently reading The Birth Partner that they borrowed from me. A friend of theirs told him to read "What to Expect" and I told him under no circumstances should either of them read that book. Thanks in advance ladies.

An excellent book for dad, in my opinion, is Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn by Simpkin, Whalley, and Keppler.....
Also, I suggest he pull up Robin Weiss's website...she teaches online CBE...free. He can go along online at his own pace!

I think the Birth Partner is one of the best for Dads. As well, I like The Birth Book by Sears because it's so non-mainstream but written by a physician - sometimes that carries real weight with men, especially ones married to an RN.

I think mamma should suck it up and go to a class with her hubby. I did it.

I think she would if they could find one that worked with their schedules a little bit better. He is on the road alot as he works in sales and she works alot of shifts and weekends. I have offered to sit down with him and at least go over the stages of labor and what to expect even though I haven't taken a cbe course yet.

I completely agree with The Birth Partner. I think all people who plan to attend a birth should read that book. Also, have they tried looking for something different than typical hospital classes like Hypnobirthing, Hypnobabies, Birthing From Within or any out of hospital classes? She may be bored with the medical side of things but an out of hospital class isn't going to focus all of their time on that.

The client I am have (due any time now) lives in a really small town (like 3-4 hours outside the city - she is staying with relatives here until baby comes) that doesn't have classes and she and her DH watched a Lamaze DVD and they liked it. Maybe your client's DH can watch that.

And not all classes have to be typical 6 week courses. Have they thougth about looking for one that is shorter in duration since his travel schedule may not allow a longer class? Maybe an 8hr Saturday class or something?
