My midwife, Jane, called the other day and said she had had an inquiry from someone wanting to take her CBE class, but lived 'too far' (aka, out by me - I'm about an hour from Jane's), so Jane gave her my name & number b/c I teach the same class as Jane. So this person called me on Wednesday, we talked for maybe 5 minutes about my class schedule, what I teach, what the fees are, and she says she'd get back to me Thursday after her drs appt. Calls me Thursday afternoon, says she wants to sign up for the CBE class, AND she wants to hire me as their doula, and was going to drop a check in the mail the next day! You could have knocked me over with a feather - I haven't met her yet, and I might have talked to her a total of 15 minutes by them. So she starts classes on 1/23, and is due 4/6. It was a GREAT start to the new year lol.

( ok, I hate to do it, but somebody play the *wonk wonk* music ) For CBE classes, I'd have no problem with someone hiring me over the phone. For my doula services, however, I would personally still count her as a 'potential client'. The reason I say this is because I require that we meet for an interview/consultation. First, she must agree to and sign the contract, as well as pay her retainer before I'll consider myself "hired". Secondly (and no less important), I require that we feel comfortable with each other for a doula/client relationship. I'd say that usually I can tell if I'm comfortable with someone over the phone, but there have been a couple of times when meeting her and her birth partner in person did reveal that we wouldn't be the best match.

that is nice when it happens but a little weird too. it has happened to me on 3 different occasions. I always am afraid that a woman is going to hire me that I don't work well with.
