I just wanted to share the great thing that a client told me at her birth last week.
After meeting the family in triage, we walked over to the l&d room and got situated. We had only been in the room for a few minutes when my client told me that all the pressure was in her hips. I explained about the double hip squeeze technique, and said that I would try it out for a contraction or two and for her to let me know if it was any help.
So, she let me know that a contraction was beginning and I found my spot on her hips. I exerted pressure during her contraction and let off as the contraction was diminishing. Her reaction surprised the heck out of me. I anticipated either a "Nah, that didn't do anything" or a "It helped a bit". What I heard was "Yvonne, you're my epidural!"
Later on the husband said to me that when the mom was laboring at home, she mentioned that she might consider an epidural because it hurt so much. It was uplifting to be able to alleviate some of her discomfort and be a help to this family.
So, that was the ticket for her! How great that felt to hear those words.
