successful vbac
so she went into labor at 1:23 am. tuesday and she tried to stay home as long as possible, so she made it until 4:30pm wednesday. then her grandparents made her go to the hospital because her mother called the doctor and told him that she had green amniotic fluid {which wasn't true it was a miscommunication} and so that scared everybody and they all freaked out. which led for her to be forced to the hospital against her wishes. they were already getting her ready for an emergency c-section before we got there.
we get into a room and we were BLESSED to have a nurse who had a home birth in the hospital {her husband caught, the doctor watched!} she was extremely supportive and helped us both so much. when we finally got settled, my client and i explained the situation and they checked her and there was no green amniotic fluid. and she was 8 cm!!!
although we had some negativity in the room from family, mostly directed at me, we went on about our way with the labor and worked together. she tried rocking on her hands and knees, laying on her side and sitting straight up to get him into position.
they ended up putting in the internal fetal monitoring, which actually helped her to be able to do all of those position without grief from the nursing staff. although she didn't want the IFM she had to make compromises somewhere, just so they will let her do what she wanted: have a vbac.
when she started feeling pressure she got ready to push she started with all her might! it was incredible. she pushed hard for an hour. he was moving down but toward the end, he stayed at one spot for 30 min the doctor said that if he didn't come down it was going to be one of two choices. 1. vacuum 2. c-section. she was worn out, absolutely exhausted. you could see about a nickle size of his head when she pushed so we knew he was there and he wanted to come out. she looked to me for advice and i said, 'nikki he's right there, you can see when you push. i think he just needs a little help, i would suggest the vacuum.' her grandmother on the other hand, had been saying c-section from the moment she got pregnant and wanted to tell everybody what she thought. in the end, she choose the vacuum. i told her, 'when they get the vacuum on, you need to push as LONG and HARD as you can! i KNOW you can do this. he's almost here.'
she had two contraction, pushed a total of 6 times and he was out!!!
as soon as he was out {she got to watch as she pushed} she looked at me and the look on her face just couldn't be matched. she grabbed me and hugged me and we just both cried. he was 9 lbs even!!!!
it was so amazing. i am still in shock. i couldn't stop thinking about it all night.
so, to all those people who doubted her, HA!
and for all of those who supported her, THANK YOU.
it was wonderful to see someone succeed in something that they worked so hard for. she was so exhausted but she still did it. with NO pain meds!!!! so she had her natural birth. even if it wasn't a pure birth, it was still natural. she ended up with IFM, vacuum extraction and an episiotomy. but she done it without pain meds, like she wanted and it was vaginal like she wanted.
thank God for that nurse. i hope i can work with her again. she was wonderful and a tremendous help. not to mention her boyfriend, he was awesome too. very helpful and supportive, they had wonderful chemistry. her best friend was there too toward the end and she was helpful as well.
of course, it didn't go perfect, a lot of things could have been different, she could have had more support from the people who love her but what can you do? cell phones could have been turned off and not talked on during pushing and people could have quit walking in and out of the room while pushing. she came SO close to a c-section twice and just barely missed it by the skin of her teeth. the dr. himself who said CBE's were a bunch of idiots was impressed and said it was a miracle because the baby was so big and she's so little. he was not confident that it would be a vbac at all but that didn't stop him from supporting her. he was a jerk some of the time but then he did try to do what she wanted. he even shook my hand, which no other doctor has done that to me before.
i am so happy for her. i can see a small change in her already. she stood up for herself twice yesterday and i know that more is to come. i love her and i am so proud of her for not giving up. she deserves a medal. seriously. the nurse said that even she was getting worried and that she's so glad my client had a success story.
{she's also my cousin and had invested a lot in to her because i believed so strongly that she could do it. i am so happy that she was able to accomplish a goal that so many others doubted or didn't understand. i hope that this birth will encourage her to be a great CBE and to give her even more self-confidence.}
