I went to a birth a few days ago. I was a little nervous because although I've worked with the midwives in this group before, I've never worked with any of the docs. This mom was very challenging laborer (did not want to take suggestions, but was seriously struggling with persistent lip of cervix). I was only there for four hours, but it was one of the more challenging births I've been to.
Anyhow, her doctor and his resident (was the resident's first natural birth) were there throughout her entire lip/pushing stage. Which in itself was quite impressive. He even asked me at one point if the cold washcloths were cold enough, and when I said I could use some more ice, please, one of the nurses scurried off to get it!
The doc and resident were mostly quiet and observant, didn't have a lot of helpful suggestions for her. Which sometimes is not a bad thing. So the nurse, her DH and I were really working hard. REALLY hard.
She had the natural birth she wanted, and was thrilled! After the birth and before he left, the doctor came over and shook my hand with a big smile! I'm dropping him a note of thanks. But I'll tell you, that handshake said so much. I felt really respected and appreciated as part of the birth team. By a DOCTOR!

That's great, I love it when I get good responses from the hospital staff... especially the doc. Great job!!!
