This is priceless!
I haven't posted here much, but I just had to share with some ladies that would find this as funny as I did. I recently attended a birth as a back-up doula after the mom had been in labor for about 26 hours (induction). After about 2 more hours and the docs turning the pitocin up again and again and watching her uterus basically give up (she literally would not contract anymore), the doc comes in to tell her that she needs a cesarean. He was a very young doctor and as he was explaining all of the risks involved, he stops and asks who I am. I just told him that I was her doula, and this is the funny part....he goes, "Oh, are you okay with her getting a c-section?" My mouth about dropped open. I don't know what he has seen or heard about doulas, but he looked a little scared. It took me a second, but I said, "That is a decision that she has to make and I am just here to support her." THEN...he looked totally stunned and goes, "Can I have your business card?" LOL!!
Thanks for listening - I just figured that is like a once in a lifetime occurence and I had to share!

that is too funny!
It really is too bad that happened to that woman though, to have 26 hours of induced labor AND a cesarean How traumatic. It's so good she had a doula there at least!

it's nice to know this doc has a good sense of what doulas are/do, now! Hopefully he'll spread the word to his fellow docs. You must have been taken aback for a moment when he asked you if it was ok. I don't know that I would have been able to come back with a good answer since I'd probably be sitting there with MY mouth open.

lol Great story! I think it is our job yo present a great work ethic to the doctors and nurses as well, so that maybe we can educated them on the proper way to assit a birthing mother. We don't tell her what she needs we offer suggestions and education so that she may decided... something they might want to try. great job!
