Wow!

I asked a midwife for some feedback/constructive criticism following a birth I attened with her. I was floored to receive her response yesterday (which she also sent to my bosses).
"So often, I have encountered doulas who have alternate agendas other than helping women through birth. Be it their own or a greater community/world agenda. I have worked with doulas who are obviously trying to re-validate their own birth experience or make a woman’s birth into what they think it should be, not what is nest for the woman and her family. I have also worked with doulas who enter a room with an adversarial position against nurses and/or me. Basically, they have made the births about themselves and positioned the client in a way that they are the only person who can help/protect them.
This is so not how you operate and the impact of that is profound. I sense that you are truly in this for the woman and her family. A pure example of this was during the birth we attended together when you showed the father how to rub the mother’s back and then quietly stepped aside so he could “help” her. This was a true act of giving on your part. You support not just a woman, but a family and honor their birth. Not by making it what you think it should be, but by helping them make it into their birth, in their family, in their life.
"

Wow, just wow. I was so floored. Now that I have all my certification feedback forms, I never get provider feedback anmore, and those forms are usually so vague. I kind of went out on a limb to ask her for feedback, but I'm glad I did. It's funny because most of the time I get the lowest (4 or 3) on support of the partner, but I definitely did not do anything differently so I guess other providers just didn't notice!

Anyway, I just wanted to share because I was so excited.

What a wonderful evaluation. That should go in your "goodie" file. My mom told me about this - to keep a file with all the nice letters etc that anyone has sent you, then you've got something to bolster yourself with when you're feeling low or useless.

Yes, you make a difference!
