Can I just tell you all how much I love being/becoming a doula. I have wanted to do this all my life, I just didn't know what this was, lol.
Two things I wanted to share:
1.) So I am with my client over the weekend for a housewarming party with her, the husband and some of our classmates from high school. So we are talk about the baby and she tells everyone I'm her doula and she's going natural. "Oh no, take the drugs!" one girl remarks. Mom (client), as she washing dishes say, "nope, I want natural." I love her. The other mom (classmate) proceeded to say how the first was natural and the second was a section because the doc thought it would be a big baby . I just smiled, nodded and kept my mouth shut. I figured, if she was happy with it, who was I to cause her any birth trauma.
2.) Saw a family friend expecting her first. We were all talking and she brings ups how she is high risk and has to go to weekly ultrasounds (she doesn't say the nature). Then she says they want to do all these procedures including amnio which made her uncomfortable. I shared with her some of the risk with amnio (which she did not know) and we talk about informed consent/informed refusal. Very informal, I explained to her that she can always weigh the pros & cons of a procedure and if she is not comfortable or willing to accept a procedures risk to her and/or her baby that she could either delay or refuse altogether. Do you know how happy that made her? I would to become her doula so we will see. She could use the support.
Did I tell you how much I love what we do? I learn, the mamas learn. It's not about the perfect birth but the best possible birth for mother and baby. Ahhh, now I will revel in the glow and warmth that is doula...

Thanks for sharing this! It warmed my heart as well. I think you sound like you have a very wise way about you... to be able to talk with these women and know when saying something would be helpful and when it wouldn't. Super!
