awesome VBAC this morning!
had an awesome VBAC last night... so thought I would share.
She called at 11:30pm and said they were leaving , she was having having back pain, and since they lived an hour away from town she would go now, and probably go to her sisters.
She called me back at 1:30am, she was at the hospital, they had just arrived and she was 10cm!
I jumped into my clothes and was out the door. I live 1/2 hour away on the other side of town. I arrive, sure it would be over, but she was still pushing. She pushed another hour, and she used the squat bar, which never happens here, but baby would not move down.
Dr. says she can help with some forcepts, I ask if maybe a vacum would help...Dr says she can try the vacum first. Bobbi agrees to the vacum. About 5 min more of pushing, and total episiotomy refusal, out comes a huge 10 pound boy!! for her. Baby was definatly posterior, and 3 days post dates. She only had a small tear.
She was so happy, no induction, no epidural, no drugs and no section!. Her last labour she laboured about 24 hours after an induction, with an epidural, and pushed for an hour before her section of an 8.5 pound baby)
So while I do feel like I did not do much, I know that throughout the last months, I have given her lots of encouragment that her body will work, and lots of info on things she didn't know., and she learned them and put them into practice.
Just had to tell someone...

Michele...
I really do not know how I missed this, but I hope you don't mind this late ! It sounds like you did a great job with educating mom, and it sounds like both mom and doula were fabulous! I really enjoyed reading about this birth. Great job, doula!

I have had 3 very successful VBAC clients. Of course all of them have avoided all the intervention that lead to their original sections. Our OB seems to fine with VBACs.
I am not sure on our VBAC stats here, but no one who wants one and hires me seems to be getting to much hassle. But we have a 25% section rate to start with.

Darn ..you posted this in April! I missed it too Thanks for catching it Lori.
Yay I love successful VBAC stories. Maybe that's your specialty Did all your VBACs have the same OB?
Congrats!

yup... I work in a small city, so most VBACs see the one and only OB, and there is only about 3 Drs. that deliver.... so I consistantly work with the same drs and same hospital staff. They all know me, and we chat about lots of things, and they are always happy to work with me.... and I am the only doula in town, so it makes it really nice.

Our small local hospital has stopped doing VBAC's altogether which only leave women with the option of traveling 2-4 hours for their birth. It is disappointing, because in the past the c-section rate was high - so now all those women have to have repeat c-sections.
The reasoning behind the decision was that they don't have a 24 hour on-call surgery crew, which ACOG says is necessary for doing VBAC's. The Midwives fought the decision, but lost.
I have, in the past attended some successful VBAC's at home, which was wonderful. I'm always glad to hear that women get the option.
