Question Bed Position ???

I went to a birth last night, my sixth, she was a first time mom, 5 hours of labor and 10 mins of pushing. She was having a hard time laboring on the bed in transition, and when I suggested to her that she get upright to help move the baby down, the nurse commented that its better (or sometimes better, I can't remember) to lay at a 45 degree angle on the bed instead of be vertical and it helps the baby to come out better, so that it can come around a corner or something. It didn't make any sense to me really.

I didn't want to be confrontational about it, so I asked her "What about gravity?" and she seemed flustered. Guess that had never occured to her, being so brainwashed. Ugh. But anyway, does anyone know if there is some bit of truth to this? I know laying flat on your back is bad, but does this ever really help?

I'm wondering if she was saying the baby can get under the pubic bone easier at a 45 degree angle as opposed to being completely upright. I always prefer upright.
