Relaxation CDs
Who is good?
what do you like?
why?
What do you typically bring to births?
Do you let Mamma pick what she wants for the birth and you dont bother bringing any?
How much did you/ do you spend on cds for births?
iPod or cd?

Can't wait to see the responses here. I'm really curious about this too. There's some good stuff on this thread as well: Music for Labor

I tend to go to the stores and "listen" to them and if I like it then I buy it. I also encourage moms to bring what they like. Mine is mainly just relaxation type stuff, but I encourage them to bring what they like. I never spend much on my music and think the most I might have spent was $15 for a cd that I wanted for my massage business.

So far, I've had moms bring their own stuff because music is so very personal. I'm never confident that they'd love what I love. For those who've brought their own music, it really changed the whole mood in the room, and even the nurses and Midwife loved it!
I think that most of my moms end up forgetting to bring their's, however. Because they say they'd like to bring music and seem to often forget, I think it would be nice for me to pick up a few things in the near future, just in case. I hope to get an IPOD for birth music soon (tax write-off! ), so hopefully I can bring along an IPOD and a small speaker or maybe an IHome. That shouldn't take up much room at all in my doula bag.

I like Enya and also a Greogoran monks chant CD that I have from my college days and also, this may sound very weird but I like the whale songs CDs but that is more for myself, I'm not sure I would bring that to someone's birth. But like others have said, most moms bring their own music.
In terms of guided relaxation (in general, not birth-realted) I like the stuff by Effective Learning Systems www.efflearn.com, I just find that guy's voice soothing.

wow... whale songs? I dont think I've ever heard that... sounds interesting!
I love Enya.
I also like Norah Jones but I know that she's definitely a certain style and not everyone like jazz... though they are crazy who dont!

Yeah, I remember when they came out in the 80s it was very cool (my sister ahd a record of them). Basically it is just an underwater recording of the sounds whales make when calling each other. The sounds are very deep and that coupled with the fact they are underwater makes for some lovely, haunting "music" But like I said, it's not for everyone...
PS If you don't like Norah Jones, you are indeed certifiable

LOL on the whale music. At the hospital where I teach, one day I found a "Monterey Bay Ocean Music" CD and since I love Monterey - it is my favorite place on Earth! - I listened to the first song or two while setting up my classrom. I liked it and decided to use it in class that day. It was mostly classical music with waves in the background.
So the class comes in adn we start on a relaxation exercise, and I restart the CD. The third "song" turned out to be just whale sounds, but I kind of liked it so we just kept going until one dad said "You're not trying to give the moms a subtle hint about their weight with this music, are you?" We all laughed SO hard for a good 5 minutes. Then I restared the CD from the beginning and we started the exercise over.

I have some faves that I use for teaching relaxation and if they like them I will bring them to the birth if they want. These are the ones that are most popular with my students/clients
Beethoven Forever by the Sea (Ocean sounds with-duh-Beethoven's music)
Lisa Lynne Franco Moonsongs (New agey Celtic harp and flute, very relaxing and peaceful)
R Carlos Nakai Earth Sprirt Indian (Native American Indian) flute

lol, utah doula!
I think classical music is universal. I like the ocean sounds with it, that would add a nice touch.
I need to go to my freaky cd shop and look around!

I am so glad that yall are talking about this. I have been trying to think of what music to bring to my birth. I have a few relaxing cd's that we use for massage. My favorite two are Healing Music Project it's a great one and the other is called Elements Body and Soul.

Thought about taking maybe some of my softer techo music like DJ D-Fuse. Anyway I might check back to see if any more great music ideas.

Generally if I hear something I like, I get it. I have CDs and ipod; I downloaded eight hrs of my stuff onto an ipod shuffle. Usually I only bring the ipod and the ipod speaker unless my client has their own CDs that they are bringing. Usually if they are bringing their own music they bring it on an ipod (that's what made me invest in ipod speakers and my own shuffle!!)
I ask ahead of time if they want my music or their music.
How much do I spend - not much and I picked up my music here and there, so not a big expense.
Let me look at my CDs and see what I have here:
Pachabel Forever by the Sea
Mother Earth's Lullaby Visualization Music
RainDance by Philip Elcano
Lifescapes Sleep
Lifescapes The Best of Massage and Meditation
Sounds of Life
Nature's Creation Relaxing Tides
These next two are Christian CDs; I only use them with Christian clients. I found them in a Christian bookstore, and they have gone over very well with my Christian clients:
Instruments of Your Peace
Serenity
I also have some misc stuff that I burned from itunes - a song here, a song there.
What I would like to find is some good peppy music for pushing!! I have enough relaxation stuff

My all time favorite
I have lots I take to births with me but my all time favorite set (and favorite of most of my birthing moms) has been "Sounds of Life" a musical journey for Childbirth and beyond. There are 3 CD's in the set and over 3 hours of music on them. If any of you would like the website to order it I'm sure it will come up with a google search or send me a PM.
Doula hugs,
Sara
PS Anyone else have these?
