We watched the most recent episode of BONES on HULU last night and I was both drawn in and annoyed. Within the first few minutes of the episode the main character, Temprance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist, and her partner, Sealy Booth, a FBI agent are in disagreement about where the safest place for Temprance to give birth, home or hospital. Temprance makes a big fuss on the hospital tour about how actually it's less safe b/c of all the germs, but doesn't do much to say why homebirth is better.
Then, in the next scene her lab assistant announces she's showing her support by being trained as a doula, to which Temprance replies, "you're not getting anywhere near my cervix." The assistant answers, "I'll stop at your perineum." AGGG!!! NOOO!!!!
The episode ends with Temprance giving birth in a barn, no midwife present, Booth catching the baby, a scripted ode to the Nativity birth, reminding the Catholic Booth that if it's good enough for his Savior, it's good enough for the mother of his child.
I normally love this show, but it reminded me of my friend who is a police officer but can't stand to watch crime dramas on TV b/c they are so unrealistic. Will I stop watching BONES? Probably not. Will I be writing a letter to the producers anytime soon? Maybe.
