This online, self-paced introductory course is the perfect way for Doulas to further their education and learn the basics about supporting their clients through grief due to perinatal loss. Covering the definition, unique aspects, and misconceptions of perinatal loss, you will learn how to provide a standard of care that will effectively help bereaved parents.
Hopes and dreams are part of every pregnancy, but for some, their dreams don’t come true. Each year, over half a million dreams are shattered by early pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or newborn death. In this lesson you will learn the definitions, statistics, and unique aspects of pregnancy loss, stillbirth, and newborn death; common myths and misconceptions related to perinatal loss; and a Standard of Care for perinatal loss. In addition, you will learn what bereaved parents find helpful in coping with their loss.
Bereavement Services is the leading provider of bereavement education and resources for healthcare professionals worldwide. This course is currently the only clinically-based online bereavement education available, and is priced very reasonably (US$20).
Also available are the 'Theoretical Framework of Grief' and 'Communicating With the Bereaved' units, which will further enhance your ability to understand and support your clients. While centered specifically around grief, the curriculum can quite easily be translated to other aspects of our care.
These courses are a reminder that everyone grieves differently, and offer us important basic tools and lessons that can be valuable to our Doula work. I would recommend all three courses to be taken together (package price is US$50) for any Doulas supporting families through pregnancy, birth, or the postpartum period.
