This is a great selection to show parents. It deals with many different ways to cope with labor. From the DONA Boutique description: Quote: Join Penny Simkin’s class as she explains and demonstrates numerous physical and psychological comfort measures for labor. This 40-minute videotaped childbirth class features breathing patterns, visualizations, labor support, and many other non-pharmacologic comfort measures, and shows women in labor and their partners using these measures. Simkin is one of North America’s foremost childbirth educators with extensive experience as a teacher and a doula.

Penny is great and her information is good but I find this video to be VERY outdated looking. The quality of the production is fairly terrible as well. My favorite Penny video is Relaxation Rhythm and Ritual.
ETA: I choose not to use the video mostly because of the population I serve (15-25 year olds). The one time I showed it in a class I actually had people get up and go to water cooler and start chatting in the hallway... they were THAT disconnected from it. I also think the content is so easy to teach yourself, right there, interactively in the classroom, where they experience it for themselves and actually LEARN how to do it with their partner. Why bother to have them passively watch a video?

This style of clothes and hair is outdated BUT the information is great and won't be outdated with time. This is a great video for those (dads and doulas!) looking to see how to use comfort measures for birth.

For the money, it is a decent video. I do really like the back labor section and most of my students get such a kick out of the white guy with an afro that the "datedness" (that isnt' a word is it?) isn't a big deal. Have to admit thought, that is the only section of the video I use.

I like the Three R's as well, but I don't think that is something I would feel comfortable showing in EVERY class, to EVERY expectant parent. This is something I would show to just about anyone and feel good about that.
