I am so excited about my clients successful VBAC this week, and just wanted to share. She dealt with a lot of fears, and I spent more time with her prenatally (by phone, e-mail and in person) than I have ever done with a previous client. One of her main goals was to stay at home as long as possible to avoid the continuous EFM and other interventions she was worried about them pushing on her.

On the day before her due date, she had crampy feelings all day long, and at about 8 PM she started noticing a pattern and called me. At 12 midnight she called again, she had lost her mucous plug and cx were 6 min. apart. She was going to try to sleep and call me back later. She called again at 4 AM and cx were 5 min. apart. She sounded a little scared, so I told her I would get on the road. I was on the way at about 4:45 when her husband called and said her water had broken. I told him to time a few cx to see if they were much closer together yet. He called back 10 min. later and said they were 2 min. apart and 1-1 1/2 min. long. I could hear her groaning in the background. I told them to get ready to leave, and I arrived at their home just in time to jump in the back seat of their truck and ride with them to the hospital. All the way there she was having pressure and an urge to push, and was talking about an epidural. I told her I thought she was too late for that, and also much more uncomfortable because of being in the truck. We got there shortly after 6 AM, they took her to triage (which made her husband mad at the separation) and 5 min. later they came out and told us she was complete. We went back to her room, and the baby was born at 6:46 AM.

She wasn't sure about the experience at first, but yesterday she told me it couldn't have been more perfect. I am so happy for her! She says she is going to start an ICAN support group in my city since we don't have one yet. She will be a wonderful advocate for VBAC birth in our community!

Oops I just realized this should have gone under birth stories - I'm sorry about that.
