I have a client who is due at the end of July, and she expressed a very serious interest in breastfeeding AT LEAST a year (yay her btw!).

I'm curious as to what my limit is as far as breastfeeding information and not being a breastfeeding counselor/lactation consultant.

Am I technically not allowed to give her information, or would I be able to give her information that is important to her certain situation (she's in the military), basic information on breastfeeding, and the contact information for a LC in the area?

I don't want to overstep my boundaries...she's a really sweet girl, who is really shy and has a hard time talking to doctors and stuff like that about "private" things and I just want to help her succeed....especially since she's all alone at the moment.

You can give information in whatever capacity you feel you are qualified. I usually discuss the first latch after birth (and suggest self-attachment), what the first days should look like and what to expect, info about cluster feeds, how often babies nurse. Heck, I give them info on the safety of bedsharing, carseat safety, circ, all kinds of stuff!

Oh yes, breastfeeding information is definately within your scope. I share, DVDs, books and websites. However, if Mom seems really anxious about it, I will refer her to an IBCLC either before and after baby arrives.

Awesome, thank you. I feel completely comfortable going over the basics with her and helping her through what could turn into a very difficult time (she's in the military, her partner is in a different state and she has no support here) and will definitely have some contacts ready for her if she needs a LC.

Is there a La Leche League group in her area?? Definitely suggest she check out a meeting or two during pregnancy. You can also go and check it out so you know what they are like so you can refer other mothers. Find US groups here: LLL in the USA - Groups

i personally feel that anyone who is a doula should get additional training in breastfeeding, as you are with them when they give birth and in that first hour....they are going to need your help and support

My new client just asked if I had any extra training and I was honest, I don't. I have however nursed 4 babies through all kinds of problems and am still nursing my 2yo.

It's in your scope of practice, especially if you've had the experience yourself.
