I always wear shoes for hospital births for the reason Michele stated, but I could see taking extra slippers for mom. My moms tend to bring their own socks or slippers, though. I don't bring them in my doula bag but rather include a mention of them in a handout that I give for suggested things to bring to the hospital.

I use clothes cold, and as hot as you can get them with the hospital tap...not very in my experience. For cool clothes I prepare 2 at a time, so one is always ready. Being out in the open air keeps it cool!. I buy 6 packs or so at the Dollar store. Cold ones I wash and re-use, hot ones go in the big blue bag, with "waste." VAGINA CROCKPOT...I like that one.

What do you recommend to mom's to pack in theirs? as little as possible I tell them to leave everything in the car until the baby is born. To bring in right away, I recommend a robe (if she really hates the idea of wearing one gown backwards), an extra pillow, birth ball, music, toothbrush and toothpaste, hair tie, still camera and maybe a blank piece of card stock for footprints to put in her own baby book. What one item would you be lost without? instant oatmeal in a tupperware What one item do you take "just in case"? my camera with fresh batteries What item could you just leave at home? (and not really miss or is available at the hospital? rice socks. you can fill an exam glove with warm water and use it the same way, just tie it off really well. Does anyone bring a swimsuit to help/accompany mom in the shower? no, i tell dad/partner that is their job. if i have to rush in as in an emergency, i always have an extra set of clothes in my duffle. I have a few items that I don't see others listing so. They are Deoderant for me, tampons or a deva cup and a rebozo. I also carry a larg assortment of essential oils and homeopathy.

Hi Lori, I don't know if this was meant for me but I was thinking about slippers for myself. But on second thought, I will just invest in some really comfy shoes.

I'm sorry, but I wasn't very clear, was I? Notice the time of 12:25 am ; I must've not been thinking straight. I think I might have been half-way questioning Michele (wrongfully thinking that she might have misunderstood who the shoes were for), but also indirectly asking you what you had meant. I guess it was too late that night for me to make a coherent post! Sorry about that!

Selina wrote: what are herbal rice socks and calms forte? Herbal Rice socks can be heated up and put on the back or wherever there is pain. It has calming herbs in it. Hylands Calms Forte to help with anxiousness and restelessness, though since I have RR now I doubt I will use that. RR works faster.

Hi all,
I also pack a copy of Mom's birth plan/her list of birth wishes and during the birth, when I have a moment, I place a check mark next to all the things she's accomplishing on her list. I then make a copy and go over it, with her, during a PP visit. It can work very well. Lots of satisfied looks when she sees her instincts and strengths lined up beautifully. There are times when it took a turn and I short-hand note on her plan... how great she made the choices she did or how she handled the changes.
Happy day,
doulalorr

Wow!!! There is amazing insight in all of these replies!!!! I am getting ready to start my doula bag this week. I'm sure that I will probably put too much in there but I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Thank you so much for all your thought and effort in this!

Thanks for all these great answers on what to have in your bag. I am getting close to my first birth and havent had my workshop and was at a loss about what to have in my bag in case mom goes into labor before my workshop! This question was going to be my first post! I am so glad I stumbled upon this website!

I've always wondered if a Sarong would work. I have a drawer full of them. Thanks.
