I am becoming more and more interested in herbs and their medicinal/complimentary purposes. I was wondering, does anyone know how to go about becoming an herbalist? I truly know nothing about the process. Also, anyone one of any courses or places where courses can be taken in Oregon? Or even Washington or Cali? Thanks all!

I know many others here can answer this better than I can, but I'll just toss in my two cents quick...I believe it is quite a long time and process to become an Herbalist--that is, be at a level where you could confidently be recommending remedies to clients. However, check out Birth Arts "Advanced Women's Herbal and Aromatherapy Certification" course. It's only $50 and I'm learning a ton...I think once I am done I will go from there...

A friend of mine got her Masters in Acupuncture at Tai Sophia (a school in the DC area) - they also have a Herbal Medicine program. I know you said you're on the other coast, but I thought it might give you some helpful info: Tai Sophia Herbal Medicine, Chinese Medicine, Alternative Medicine, Herbal School, Herbal CareerThey may be able to refer you to a school near you.

I am in the Certified Herbalist program through Heart of Herbs. I love it! Heart of Herbs Herbal and Aromatherapy Education- Demetria ClarkIf you have specific questions about the program you may feel free to PM me and I'll help as much as I can. Also, Aviva Romm has a great program. A bit pricey IMO, but I have no doubt the info is top notch. About Herbal Medicine for Women: Certified Women's Herbal Educator Distance Learning Program | Aviva RommThis list seems to be more for B&M schools: HerbNET - Herb Schools - United StatesBest of luck!

Heart of Herbs Herbal School has quite a few herbal students up your way. It is distance learning and eLearning but it could be a start. Heart of Herbs Herbal and Aromatherapy Education- Demetria Clark

I'm also planning to do the Advanced Women's Herbal and Aromatherapy Certification through BAI/Heart of Herbs. It's a great value for the money spent, and I think it will be a good beginning, since it's specifically tailored toward the primary use I plan to put that knowledge toward.

I also used Hearth Of Herbs - womens herbalist program and I really LOVED it. for me personally I wanted something more specific to Women so it was an IDEAL choice. I learned so much from it and have found the training useful time and again. I believe Demetria also offers a Master Herbalist program which considering my experience with the womans course I would seriously consider if I had wanted to go that route or an alternative would be that RoseMary Gladstar offers a very nice not to too expensive distance Master Herbalist course.
