I am a doula but I have also had EMT training. I would really love to be a monitrice, but I cannot find any information on how to get certified, or even where to find training. I practice in VA and TN. Can anyone help?? Thanks!

In most states monotrice work is not something that is liscenced and falls into a gray area of medical practice. I'm not sure there are certifications. I am only comfortable practicing as a monotrice now that I am a certified midwife. I did before, here and there, but felt about the same about it as I did working with an underground midwife - Doing stuff the medical establishment thinks you have no right to do.

Is there a midwife you can assist locally? I think that midwife's assistant training covers the monitrice stuff.

I am doing the Birth Arts International Monitrice/Midwifery Assistant program in VA as well, in order to get the skills set you have to either take additional classes or apprentice yourself to a midwife. I haven't gotten that far- I am also getting my doula certification- but hope to take a workshop through sacred mountain midwifery to get the skills I lack, once I've gotten a few more births under my belt. The monitrice program also has a lot more reading, history, etc than the doula program.

There aren't any specific additional classes to take - you just have to figure out a way to get certain skills- and you may be able to get them by a nurse or midwife teaching you - but if you don't know someone to work with you may wind up getting extra trainings for said skills. The only trainings that are *required* are things like, taking at least 2 childbirth education classes, neonatal resuscitation, CPR, etc.
