I am fairly sure I read (when I was TTC#1 7 YO) that it is difficult, if not impossible to get enough folic acid just from foods. Maybe if you were juicing a lot of greens, several times a day... but I think I remember reading that the farmed greens we eat are lower in FA than their native relatives that humans evolved eating.

From BestStarts - Ontario: Is there a baby in your future? Plan for it! This is a free download. You can also order print copies (very low cost) from their website. There is also this handout on pregnancy nutrition. Basically speaking, best practices during pregnancy are also best practices during the preconception period. Hope this helps!

Nicky Wesson has a great book Enhancing Fertility Naturally that covers diet and many other aspects.

My idea is to also do a cleanse or fast before trying to conceive so that you lessen your body burden of toxins.

Hi. I know this post is a year old, but for those that are browsing the archives, I wanted to point out that the timing of a preconception cleanse is important. Opinions vary, but a cleanse releases toxins into your body's metabolic system to be cleared out. The time it takes for the toxins to fully release vary from one system to another, but you can actually expose a new pregnancy to more toxins if a cleanse was carried out just before conception. Google it, it's actually quite facinating to learn about true cleansing. I'm not talking about a weekend "kit" that leaves you running to the toilet. :-) Order of Cleansing: Cleansing the BodyComprehensive Article: Preconception Health: Nourish The Soil Before You Plant The Seed « The MommypotamusCovers nutrition, egg and sperm health, and recommends cleansing UP TO 6 months before conception. Enjoy. :-)

I like the book Real Food for Mother and Baby: The Fertility Diet, Eating for Two, and Baby's First Foods by Nina Planck. It is from a whole foods perspective and is simply broken down into what is healthy for your body at different stages.
