Do you give a receipt immediately after a payment is received, after full payment is made, or after all services were rendered?

Or after all?

I have a receipt form drawn up for insurance purposes, but lately I am thinking I should be giving out something right away so the client has proof they paid something beforehand.

What do you all do?

The doula part comes natural to me, it is the business part of it that takes some more time to figure out...:happy

I make sure that any payments made are notated at the bottom of the contract and if the want, I will give them a hand written receipt but as far at the receipt for insuranxe purposes, I give them that at the postnatal appointment. Then again, the form I give them lists the date of the baby's birth so I do have to wait.

I'll probably give them a receipt for each payment. I had planned on writing them out, but I'm hoping to find a program that will list the total due, then x amount paid, with y amount still due.. and so on for each payment.

Not to sidetrack your thread, but anyone know what I mean that can point me in the right (hopefully free) direction?

Any time money exchanges hands, I give a receipt. :yep

My contract includes a section where I fill in the deposit and balance information on the day we sign it. On completion of my services, I send out a formal invoice showing a payment summary, the services that were provided, along with my name, ABN, etc for insurance/tax purposes.

I carry a statement book that I bought at Walmart that has a white and yellow copy. I write a receipt every single time money exchanges hands, right then and there. They get the white copy and the yellow copy stays in the book. I feel better knowing that they have proof they paid me and I have all my finances in one handy dandy little book for my taxes.

I'm looking to start a freelance business in the States as a doula and childbirth educator. I've been living in Europe, where the rules governing freelance businesses are much, much more stringent.

So I would appreciate any help and pointers you could give.

1. Do I need to set up a company in order to be able to issue invoices/receipts for payments received for doula services in the States? Or can I just issue invoices/receipts as a private individual?
2. What needs to be included on an invoice/receipt?
3. Is there a difference between an invoice and a receipt?
4. How do I file taxes for income received from providing these services?
5. How do I give invoices for consultations over the phone or the internet?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if you want to have your clients make out checks to your business than you need to set up a DBA with your business name and then you can open a bank account. otherwise they can just make checks out to you
as far as taxes go you have to file a schedule c, income from self employment, so keep reciepts and records of your expenses which are deductable

Since my clients pay me via check, their cashed/bank cancelled check serves as their receipt, usually. If they ask for a receipt I have them. Deposit receipt, balance due paid receipt or for those who desire to pay in full from the start a paid in full receipt.
