I need help! I finally booked my first client and she is due in a few weeks (12-2). She didn't think she could afford a doula and then found out about student doulas. Anyway, I'm a little panicked because I have no time to prepare. She wants to meet on Thur and it might be our only meeting before the birth. What are the most "important" things I should highlight?
Please and thanks!!

Krista, I would go over what kind of birth she wants (her birth plan/preference), how you can help in that (comfort measures, position changes, counter pressure, etc), how to tell labor has started, when to call you, and give mom & partner some tools to use in early labor (eat & drink, walk, show dad counter pressure/double hip squeeze, shower/bath, sleep). Mostly being with her with a caring heart & gentle touch will take you a long way. You'll do great.

Hi everyone, I am fairly new to this forum, but thought I'd post this Visit schedule that I have written out for myself. Please feel free to copy any of it. Thanks to all for sharing theirs.
Outline of Doula Visits Initial meeting,
free or charge and obligation free.
Chat about what type of birth experience the client is hoping to have, her beliefs and ideas about birth. Find out why she is choosing to have a Doula. Answer the client’s questions about myself as a Doula. Explain fee structure and services.
The client is able to contact me after this initial meeting to confirm if she would like to employ me as her Doula.
Each Doula visit is approximately 2-3 hrs. long 1st antenatal home visit ~ getting to know youDiscuss the client’s previous birth experiences. Maybe in depth debrief/sharing of past births. Talk more about specific things that the client desires for this birth.
Talk about writing a birth plan, if not for use with care provider, for personal clarity and share with Doula. Leave article with tips for writing a birth plan and birth plan pro forma.
Sign terms of agreement and birth records release.
Leave most relevant library resources for client to read/watch/listen too.
2nd antenatal home visit ~ getting to know you moreDiscuss anything arising from the last meeting.
Go through birth plan, or assist writing/filling it in if client has not done so already. Read and discuss all the points. Talk about the Doula’s role in the birth, what the client desires the Doula to do in line with her birth preferences. Record all client’s preferences.
Talk about the role of the client’s partner in the birth.
Encourage the client to develop some affirmations. Give examples of affirmations for birth. Highlight any specific areas of importance and any fears about the birth process and develop an affirmation together. The client can use these affirmations during pregnancy or labour and birth.
3rd antenatal home visit ~ last time before birthDiscuss anything arising since last meeting.
Make any changes to birth plans and preferences.
Talk about photography preferences. Labour and birth photos or post birth only, flash or no flash. Sign photography release form.
Meet the client’s partner and any other support people who will be at the birth at least once, preferably more, during the antenatal period. Also invite their feedback about birth, this one and any previous ones.On call for birth1st post natal visit ~ either in hospital or homeWithin the first week after the birth or whenever the client wants. Could be the next day or the week later.
Talk about the birth. Encourage the client to feel positive about the outcome. Start debriefing from birth.
Birth debrief is an ongoing process and how a woman feels about her birth experience immediately after she has given birth will not necessarily be the same as how she feels in one week/one month/one year. It is a processing journey.Client may wish to discuss any concerns with breastfeeding and the baby. The Doula is to direct the mother to relevant services/ resources/ information about things that she may be concerned about.
The client to finalise their Doula services payment.
2nd post natal visit ~ at homeAbout 1 week after the 1st post natal visit.
If client was having photos taken, bring and go through the birth photos together. Looking at photos will encourage further debriefing of the birth.
Doula to do some jobs at the house for the mother, hang out washing, play with toddler etc
Listen to the client, how is she feeling about her birth, how is she coping with having a new baby. Again discuss any concerns and relevant information/services that can support the client further.
3rd postnatal visit ~ final Doula visitMostly a chance for the client and the doula to discuss ongoing topics.
Client will be asked if they would like to fill out a Doula evaluation. The Doula will ask the client if she has any feedback for the Doula about the service that she provides.
If at any time throughout the pregnancy/postnatal period the client would like to talk to her Doula she is free to make contact on the phone. The above is only a guideline for the Doula. It will change to suit the individual needs of the client.

Hi I am teacher for our school district's teen parent program and have been asked to give a lesson on the stages of labor and the difference between false labor and early labor/actual labor. Does Anyone have a written lesson plan for this I could look at? Does anyone have any great video clips and or powerpints on this subject. I would be greatful asd i will be observed. Thanks so much for any help.
